I think you are confused,
Red Diesel is Gas Oil and yes to the layman they are basically the same untill it comes to customs.
There are summer and winter grades, as in cold conditions Derv and Gas wax, well the summer grade does. Summer grade in the freeze would be troublesome.
You can read the fancy numbers as much as you like, what I`m saying is you wont notice the difference of decent Red (Gasoil) or white.
Kerosene is thinner as stated above it`s 28sec (Gas and derv are 35sec) Kerosene is basically Parafin, however there are different grades of this even, I wonder if you could tell the difference between these grades?
I know some folk who have stoves that should burn red but they mix kerosene in it or even use Kerosene alone, and others that should use Kerosene but use red because they reckon it burns slower because it`s thicker, I guess it depends on types of stoves and quality of fuel, you`d only need one bad lot of bad fuel to think its bad all the time.
Another trick is to add Kerosene to stop Derv or Gas waxing in the winter, Remember that train crash a while ago where it went on fire, they said the fuel was 1/2 and 1/2 Kero/Gas.
I agree that there are some types of stove ie/ the ones that use a wick for starters, these smoke badly with Red or Derv I would sugest you use the type that works best for you.
Thought I`d better add, Derv is often different coulors it varies from champaign colour Blue or somtimes its yellow, still we call it white. Also Kerosene is different now with the EU reg`s it used to be clear it`s yellow now and stinks to high heaven, so theres lots of variations, it`s confuseing
