  1. If it was BW's fault that you lost the door you can try asking them to pay for the costvof the replacement. Sue
  2. Try Living afloat by the Residential Boat Owners Ass. Also keep the house if at all possible even if you let it. There is no security of tenure on the waterways and you may not always be fit and well. Enjoy Sue
  3. I think the difference could be between mobile & landline Sue
  4. Has anyone sugested an internet crew site? We had reason to advertise for crew and I know people who would like to crew for others. If we could have a section where boaters could look for crew and volunteers could offer their services it would be good.
  5. Another misconception. There is only no such thing as a continuous cruising licence. BW only issue a pleasure boat licence. The continuous cruising applies to mooring or lack of one. Sue
  6. as the above states it is bw guidance quote This guidance does not have the force of law. BW would love us to believe it is law but they can't interprete an Act of parliament to say what they want it to say. Sue
  7. The above is BWs interpretation of the rule. The rule is an act of parliament and much shorter. I haven't the exact wording to hand but I am sure someone on this list has. Sue
  8. They may even send you the right key! I found out what mine fitted the other day. Sue
  9. I don't understand the replies re email. I have used my same freeserve address for years. I changed from Orange to Vodafone and back to Orange still keeping with freeserve. I phone the data dept of the mobile company and they sort it. Sue
  10. Just to throw a spanner in the works, I use Orange unlimited evening & weekends for £5 per month. I use my mobile phone which is a pda type most of the time. Like now. I can connect it to my computer but it is too much faff . My computer has a gizmo from Maplins that steps from 12v to 19v which is fine if the battery is fully charged. Have fun. Sue
  11. First Mate Guides www.canalmate.co.uk have details of vets near canals as well as lots of other info. They are kept up to date on the web site. Sue
  12. We would leave our boat at Thrup, Lower Hayford or Aynho. Sue
  13. Peope living near by often do. You have no security of tenure. As long as you realise that and are happy with this - go for it. Sueb
  14. Thanks for that info. I was given the information from BW Watford. I was told that if they gave out a licence the customers didn't pay anymore installments. I believed BW, silly me. Sueb
  15. Yes happy birthday. We are on our way but may be late. Sueb on the K & A
  16. I see Dave Mayall is on his favourite subject- unlicensed boats. Unfortunately for him BW have asked people to stop reporting unlicensed boats as it wastes their time. Not all is as it seems. Boaters that pay monthly don't get a licence. Some BW employees don't need a license. Be careful of accusing someone of being an evader - they may not be. Sue
  17. If you want to heat water by electricity you are going to want a lot of power. You don't mention a fridge. If you need so much power the boat isn't suitable to live on without a shore line. You either need a different boat, more reliant on gas or diesel or a different mooring. Also make sure you have the mooring before you buy your boat. BW are refusing licences to boats that don't comply with the regulations, such as continuous cruising. Sue
  18. Please make sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm. Kidde do a good one with a number display. I have great fun watching the numers going up and down in the winter. Also a smoke alarm in the bedroom, not the kitchen. :-)) Sue
  19. How long has this scheme got to evolve before it improves? The scheme has been in existence for 20ish years in one form or another. Now it doesn't cover 1st party risk. People used to die in petrol explosions now they are dying of carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators sit on back decks pumping fumes into boats because people were made to believe gas is dangerous and they need to charge batteries. Sue
  20. No they don't. In the construction industry accidents went up when people were made to wear harnesses working at heights. they fell over the harness. BSS have never published any figures about accidents/incidents. Although the rules have been relaxed (to third person liability) the costs have escalated. Ask who are on the BSS committees. Even the boaters representative is an examiner. Sue
  21. Although the boat safety scheme has changed a lot over the years and I have a lot of respect for Rob Mclean, it is far to expensive and inefectual. The fittng of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms should be mandatory, and should have been from the beginning of the scheme. This alone would have saved many lives. But was the scheme about safety or was it a money making idea by BW? It has certainly failed. Sue
  22. 20yrs of living with a pump out with our own pumpout kit. Only got frozen in once and a BW barge came through and broke the ice. Had a casette whilst we had a repair and couldn't wait to get rid of it Sue
  23. I didn't say don't burn it. We have burnt wood for 20yrs on our boat. Just be aware of the problems. Our stove has tried to kill us three times. The first time the dog woke us, the next two the alarm went off. And yes we do maintain the stove. Sue
  24. Make sure you have a decent carbon monoxide alarm if burning any sort of wood. falls of soot and carbon blocked chimneys are lethal. Sue
