  1. A friend of ours has been useing veg oil that he gets from a friendly pub kitchen, near his moorings, he strains all the bits of chips etc out and then mixes it with 25% diesel during colder weather to thin the oil down and it works a treat.
  2. Is every stretch of the towpath, that is not a mooring of some discription a 14 day mooring? people round here are told they are on a 14 day mooring but there are no signs to say so.
  3. Where did you hear that the mooring tender trials have been scrapped ?
  4. BW have had surveyors down to our moorings to look at selling off most of Jack and Rose Skinner's garden and outbuildings + our car park (we have residential status and the car park was one of the conditions the council told BW to provide) for development. We did get the council listing people down to try to protect the buildings, they thought that the buildings were built the same time as the canal but said English Heritage were clamping down on what they list and sure enough they didn't want to know. Will there be anything left of our heritage on the canals, if they carry on like this, I heard today that they are selling off Thrupp BW yard and outbuildings + thatched cottage and lastly rhumor has it Gunpowder Wharf is up for sale, Is this sort of thing going on anywhere els on the netrwork?
  5. I am wondering if you have seen my old boat Harry Herbs Afloat on the Grand Canal at all, it went over there about 4 years ago, a 50ft hancock and lane had a steel cabin put up in the front deck area, be interested to know if you have seen it
  6. Last summer near Little Venice, I threw some bread to a Moorhen and chick that were in a empty hopper, the moorhen flew away and a Seagull dived down to the hopper and flew off with the Moorhen chick in its beak, horrible.
  7. I personally don't think you can beat a squirrel, I've had 3 over the past 21 years on 3 different boats, not the prettiest of stoves although the new ones have been more prettified (if thats a word!) If you decide to go for another type, I would recomend that you don't buy a fire that you have to open the fire door to get the ashtray out, much better to have seperate doors so you don't get smoke filling the cabin when you want to take the ashtray out, my partner bought one of the above a few weeks ago and really regrets it. hope this is helpful to you.
  8. I'm helping a friend of mine to totally refit her boat that she has just bought, its a wooden top Lez Allen, I have just taken out some of the horrible shuttering ply that was put under the gunnels to the floor secured by 1 screw each side! anyway behind the ply pannels there are huge slabs of concrete about half the size again of a ordinary slab all along the side of the boat + ballast on the bottom. Has anyone ever heard of this being done before? should we take it out, it does not leave much room for insulation. Any advise would be great, Wendy
  9. I hear that BW broke up Regents recently, very sad
  10. Thanks for the info I'll give them a ring thanks, do you know if they do contents cover?
  11. Does anyone know of craning and slip prices in an area of say no more than a weeks travelling time from Oxford. the cheapest slip price I have so far is £160 out and in and £20 a day and craning £450 out and in. also does anyone know of an insurance company that doesn't want your boat out of the water for a hull survey at 20 years old, (for full insurance)
  12. A year will be all that they need to whack the prices way up to way beyond what anyone I know can afford A friend of ours has been on the waiting list for over 4 years to get a mooring on our site, he is (or should I say was) 1st on the list, untill this tendering came in, he may as well be the last and to top it all there will be a mooring coming up here soon. hay ho
  13. I have a photo of Ivor (somewhere) delivering coal to my boat at Thrupp, for John and Madelaine Forth in the late 80'
  14. Vitamin B complex was mentioned on a radio programme recently, worth a try

  16. Has anyone out there noticed how dangerous it is having engineering bricks placed round lock sides, as soon as they get wet they become incredibly slippery and when trying to open gates where they have them is a nightmare in wet weather, even when wearing the sturdiest of boots,
