  1. I think you may be right about it being over propped. It is not due to come out of the water until June so I'll have to learn to live with it and develop techniques for tricky manoeuvres. The boat does seem to cruise at relatively low revs (about 1500). Of course I'm relying on the rev counter being accurate. Engine mounts are sound but I assume that they are the soft type which would have been fitted with the Aquadrive.
  2. Thanks - I couldn't find anything on the web and the owner's manual that I've got doesn't mention it. I'll set it to 850.
  3. I'm fiddling aroud with the tickover speed on my new (to me) boat. Engine is a 28hp three cyl Beta with a Hurth 100 gearbox and an Aquadrive. When I got the boat there was a bad vibration at tickover (when in gear) which was set at about 600rpm. On the advice of a local boat engineer I reset it to 950 rpm. This cured the vibration but made the boat a bit fast at tickover for tricky manoeuvres and it caused the gearbox to clunk rather more when changing gear. Will the higher speed damage the gearbox? What tickover speed is normal?
  4. I've just had a hull only survey done prior to buying a 1994 42ft boat. It cost me £100 for the dry dock and £225 for the survey. I managed to book the dry dock fairly quickly and then rang round surveyors to find one who could come on that day.
  5. Moors at Bollington on the Mac. I did meet the owner once. Everything about it is unusual. The whole thing is made up of scrap parts.

    Locks

The water required to replace the displacement comes from the lock when the boat enters and displaces it thus perpetuating the argument. This is getting complicated now. I'm off to pick up the keys for my 'new' boat. Anyone want to buy a good Waterbug?

    Locks

There is no extra draw because the open lock has become part of the pound so the boat's displacement in the pound replaces the 'drawn' water. In the example I gave before the light boat requires 98 tons of water to be shifted from upper to lower pounds and the heavy boat requires 80 tons. Going up the lock requires 98 tons of water from the upper pound to be shifted to the lower pound and the heavy boat requires 80 tons.

    Locks

No. In the first case the lock is 10 ft deep. How can there be fourteen feet six under the boat when it is full?. The lock would be overflowing. The same in the second case you still have 11ft under the boat when the lock is only 10ft deep.

    Locks

If a 2 ton boat enters a lock which, when full of water but empty of boats, holds 100 tons, then there are 98 tons of water in the lock when it is full. Indisputable. If a 20 ton boat enters the same lock then there are 80 tons of water in the lock when it is full. Indisputable. It makes no difference whether you are going up or down to these figures. Going up in the first case requireas 98 tons of water to fill the lock which comes from the upper pound. In the second case the lock reqiires 80 tons of water to fill it. Going down the figures are the same. The lock requires the same amounts of water from the upper pound This makes it faster to lock a heavy boat than a light one.
  10. Site looks OK to me. Content and ease of access to that content are the most important things on a site. I'd like to be able to submit an advert for a boat online.
  11. For those who are interested a friend has put up a site with loads of songs, some with sound files and some with the music at http://www.moonlightshadow.demon.co.uk/
  12. Second time I've posted this but the first seems to have vanished. I seem to be the only one with this at the side of my posts.
  13. Can someone explain why I get a "Warn 0%" thingy on my posts when no-one else seems to?

    Eco Fans

Cos I'd already paid for the thing and the new motor was only 3quid and I like watching it go round. Its a toy.

    Eco Fans

I've got one and I honestly don't think it makes any difference. I tried holding a joss stick in front of the thing and the smoke went straight up even though it was spinning like mad. I also dropped mine and bent the shaft and Ecofan refused to supply me with a new motor. They wanted me to send it back to Canada for them to service. Found one on the net however.
  16. Unless there are witnesses other than those directly involved or some other form of evidence proving that it was the other boater's fault then I'm afraid you have little chance of recovering anything. I assume that the other boat will have sustained as much damage as yours and is as likely to claim from you. We only have one side of the story so far.
  17. I'd have thought that it would make smaller boats more popular as their licences cost less.
  18. It would mean that I'd have to drive back to the boat after functions but I can have a couple of pints now and tumble into bed. There is also the advantage of having the workshop/tools available free of charge.
  19. It is beautiful indeed. The only reason I moved from there was so that I could attend club functions and stop on the boat overnight.
  20. £20/ft pa Electric available free if I move to it Water Showers Toilets Free use of workshop Elsan Disposal Slipway £40 for a week But this is in a boat club marina. Membership £56pa
  21. The point of reducing to 72 DPI is that a computer screen will not display higher resolutions any differently so there is no point in having 300DPI as it increases the file size. I'd agree that 800 x 600 at 72DPI is usally small enough.
  22. As others have said it is up to the marina. They may well have had some bad experiences in the past. Quoting health and safety is probably a way of attempting to justify their policy. I don't have a problem with bringing up children on a boat provided that Council Tax and National Insurance is being paid by the family for their education, health care etc.
  23. I pay monthly and get licences each year, albeit sometimes a couple of weeks late, so to say that those who do so don't get a licence is utter nonsense.
  24. You are quite right - that is why there can be no definitive interpretation of "reasonable consideration".
