  1. No room for excess PV on a Nb though Peter or life would be a lot simpler, I'm thinking of perhaps another solar powered pump on a differential stat to mix the tanks when hot water is available, connect the engine circuit through a coil on both, leave the webasto on a single tank, and the solar on another. Another approach which might work is a plate heat exchanger on the solar in line with the first calorifier coil, with a small circulating pump which can remain switched off if I only need one tank of water. that way I don't lose all that lovely potential hot water when the sun is out (which obviously happens a lot in Manchester!) I don't have a back boiler on the little boatman, been considering it but tbh, I need all of the heat it makes for keeping me, my missus, the cat and the fish warm!
  2. Would you like a hand at some point in the week?
  3. following on from my "bath" post... I've found room for an additional vertical calorifier which i can site next to the original horizontal one, between them both there will be plenty of HW for my bath. It would be preferable to make use of this hot water all the time and not just for baths, so i want to connect the two. I would also like to add an evacuated tube solar hot water system. the existing calorifier has two coils, one of which is on the webasto, the other on the engine. the new calorifier is also likely to have two coils one of which i could use for the solar hot water. I would like to "mix" the hot water in the two calorifiers so they are both at the same temperature, but I'm at a loss as to the best way to do it. It's probably blindingly obvious, but I would appreciate thoughts on the subject... Bex
  4. Despite concerns about priming, I've had webasto's warming paddling pools up, warming crates of water for a camping shower up, give it a shot
  5. I can't say I am surprised to hear this and in those circumstances if it were spring tides, or there is a lot of fresh in the river I would be tempted to get back to Torksey and hang off the river moorings until the next day. Gainsborough town quay is pretty secure if there is room, but definitely put some decent spring lines on!
  6. Ali, I do understand your concerns, and share quite a few. I just wanted to add, there are other options than CRT waterways. Please don't use this site as a barometer for boaters in general, we are a very friendly, helpful, community spirited lot, the majority of the nasty comments on this site come from only a few of its membership, but really don't reflect the community, and indeed, this forum as a whole. Where in the country do you live, roughly? Warmest Regards, Bex
  7. tend to "PAYG" when it comes to burny stuff, but we've had the fire in at night for a few weeks now
  8. Is it? It, in what way? I genuinely do feel sorry for people who are so set in their ways of thinking that they still operate in the 1950's I also really don't care, I am a good friend and very generous with my time and knowledge, and as I repeatedly say, my attitude is very reflective. I make no apology for "upsetting" people by pointing out their character flaws, if they have done me the service of pointing out mine. are you suggesting that simply pointing out some of the facets of our wonderful forum membership is rude? Gosh, I think you need to re-read De-brett's, it's clearly been a while
  9. It is also rather a good job I am too well mannered to say what I think of them, but there you go. For the record, no, I don't care. I just feel a bit sorry for them.
  10. yes, I think I understand, you ask for advice and a load of "funny" people try to make stupid stuff up, tell you you're wrong and generally patronise you. Fortunately I have also learned that not everyone here are stupid, patronising, sexist, misogynistic arsewipes.
  11. I've got it.....your humour redefines humour...yes, that'll do
  12. not at all, your humour is.....your humour is.......nope, can't think what your humour is, but do carry on.
  13. oooh so the MOD use them, I shall look out! I presume you can't really hear them in operation?
  14. do you know I was just looking at one of those yesterday, but as stirling engines are essentially witchcraft I ignored it and it went away! Are your lipo's repurposed car jobs, I have been looking into them but I am struggling to work them out!
  15. hmm, I take your point about heat transfer, but the transfer would be minimised by the relatively low temperature needed for underfloor I would have thought. maybe foil backed kingspan (other insulations are available) double layered so the foil is facing down and up? Anyhoo, much as I would love to do it I am not ripping out all my interior to try!
  16. makes perfect sense, do you manage entirely on solar? so do I. I do, however, know that i would likely use the generator much more than the heating, and I usually take the boat off the mooring only for bunkers. I don't think there is a "one size fits all" solution
  17. what about a collector network directly on the baseplate, a given amount of reflective insulation on top to create a thermal barrier, then run the heating matrix through those bricks with holes in them in lieu of a more conventional frog? Always good to make stuff work for a living on a boat, and it would make my ballast less "passive"! That is the idea that's doing the rounds of the old grey matter atm, but I haven't even started adding numbers to it!
  18. I'd love to do that, but there are just over 100,000 reasons stopping me! As far as electric propulsion is concerned, I guess if you have a holiday boat, then it might not be for you, but If you are a liveaboard, a huge amount of electricity available is considerably more useful than having a huge amount of diesel in the boot on a day to day basis. Interested that you didn't consider solar thermal hot water though? Bex
  19. Lol, I haven't blocked anyone, I live by the mantra "don't block, just mock" Seems to work! Seems to work for most CCers!
  20. Good!!! Thinking of maybe converting Helena at some point, and hopefully going gasless at the same time, be interested to hear your thoughts on it. If I do actually build myself a widebeam (more pistols drawn) it will certainly be all electric (open the armoury, we need more guns). ATM though we are knocking Helena round a bit to make her more suited to live aboard by a couple. well I wouldn't exactly be all electric, and a decent cocooned generator should keep up with a heat pump I would have thought, particularly if i were to use ballast as a thermal store.....early days and depends on whether I take the plunge and go wide beam. but between a generator and 4kw of solar I think it's worth looking into
  21. Lol, I am presuming you might recall me, though I have changed a little since then. I have the same boat, albeit with more solar panels (2) and have lived aboard for about 4 years now. She's in Manchester but got here via london and leighton buzzard. Good to get in contact again, hope you're well? Glad to hear that Keith, the f**king F**ker is still kicking, pass on my regards please. do you know (unrelated to the bath) I was just looking into the use of a heat pump for heating an all electric (hybrid I guess) boat.
  22. my philosophy lecture once said "how familiar are you with Pavlov", ooh I said, rings a bell.
