  1. if the MPPT's are connected to the venus/ raspberry. you can modify them via the VRM website ! no need to be even present on the boat !
  2. did you tried it with an OFFICIAL Victron cable ? I have a USB hub with 3 MMPT's going into one USB connector and it works like a charm

  4. the logging interval is set in the Venus or CCG there you can set it from 1 minute to 1 hour Read the manual...:) you need to hit the 'spacebar' on the right . and then you can select the log interval
  5. No I am sure his cable could work...Not negating that ... Just knowing there have been some posts ( not on this board..IF IF I recall correct on cruisers forum.com ) about some cords selfmade and to Chinese imitations not working correct. The cost is minimal, why run risks.

You can set alerts in the VRM..which will email you I am using a LI bank which I got from http://shipcraft.nl/. he sells battery pack ( incl performance warranty) including a BMS based on recycled Li batteries from low mileage Crashed cars at prices comparable to Gell batteries The Pi can have many inputs
  9. 1) the Venus wifi connection was not really designed to use as the 'main connection' to the outside world...it is great to log into the Venus with your laptop, tablet or smartphone 2) Connect the Venus with a Cat 5 cable and there will be no issues. The VRM does not need a fixed IP...the connection from our router via wifi to the Venus is not always stable ..it was not designed for that ) I have connected the fuel and water gauges to the Venus and it is great to see what is still there. for that Have a old second hand iPad (1). ..it only needs a border and wifi Ye it is great to see when shore power is out ect .. I also have connected the Kabola Heater via a relay to the relay output of the Venus. ( yes the Venus relay turns the 24V solid state relay on which switches the 240 V..just an additional safe step) Since we do not live close to the boat...( a nice flight). I can turn on the heat the moment we land and by the time we arrive at the boat it is warm I am construction an optocoupler box so I can connect the bilge pumps on the digital inputs ..and then the Venus will warn me when they turn on. and some wil be connected to a door alarm and a smoke alarm. ( the optocoupler box..is an extra safety between the 24 V signal and the Venus. since the Venus uses 3.3V signals)
  10. one fun thing about the Venus.. the digital inputs.....great for getting alerts when a bike pump goes on or how many times the bilge went on.
  11. I fully agree At home and in my restaurant I cook with Gas, nothing better, BUT on the boat I cook induction, because it is safer. Much safer Do I prefer cooking on gas, yes, but I am willing to live with the limitation of electric cooking.
  12. we have made our boat 24V, 800 AH batteries and run the fridge, microwave, washer and induction hob all with he inverter. ( Ikea Hob, fridge and Microwave, samsung washer/dryer and Victron inverter). NO we hardly ever use the drying function of the washer dryer, since it uses up tooooo much water. 240 V appliances are so much cheaper than a 24 or 12 V version. ( plus cheaper and smaller cabling !) Not sure who would be cooking an hour or so at full capacity on the hob. I casually finish cooking in 10 - 20 minutes ( yes risotto and rice take longer, but it is at 100 W setting) No we do not have a generator, but we do have 4 275 W solar panels, and a 190 Amp alternator on the engine On a typical day, wth some laundry, vacuuming and then either microwaving snacks/meals or cooking on the induction I have not been under 75% op the batteries. For heating we use a Kabola diesel combination furnace with hot water and forced air (via a radiator heat exchanger which is really compact and was easy to install)
  13. yes..but it still leaves the point where the float or switch needs to reach a certain level before it turns on...thus I am working on the system where the pump turns on, checks if it pumps and if not it stops and waits till the next time, where the interval is varies depending if there was water pumped.
  14. Robbo Thanks, but I have used these pumps for a few years already ...Whale came out with these a few years before Ruhle. Problem with these pumps is , they still need 1/2 to 3/4 inch or so of water before they turn on. now 1/2 inch in a flat bottom boat means about 150 - 200 liter water before it turns on. which can easily be done with just condensation in the winter, or some small leak in the windows during the 'rainy' season So I am needing to program an Arduino or Pi to do some logic to never get it that far
  15. well dr. bob. not sure who came to the conclusion to get these cables, since you should have bought the ve.direct to USB cables, plugging directly into a USB hub or Pi. I have a GPS, 3 MPPT's and the BMV connected with the Ve -> USB cables to a USB hub to the Venus Yes the Pi's are a savings of about 200 or so, but they lack the built in power adapter and a few more pre defined inputs. I have subscribed to the development list, mainly so I see all kind of fun things being developed I am tinkering with the idea of getting a Pi just to play with the software and to add some intelligent programming for a bilge pump, to have the pump work without a float switch. Having a flat bottom in one of the boats, there will be hardly any 'height' of eater to activate a float, while the amount can be quite high.

I have a 57 ft glass fiber one in the USA and a 61 ft, 1930 s steel barge in Holland So being in either location provides me with rest full nights knowing the Venus cgx will warn me in case of possible problems plus the VRM was quite helpful showing the marina, that their electric billing was not correct And now with the marina going to a system where they get re-imbursed for solar electric delivered to the net, the ESSsystem of Viltron is really paying off
  17. tilting or moving solar panels is way much more hassle then the extra little bit of energy it give, if you have space..just slap a few more panels on the boat

I have 2 Venus. after I had first a CCGX for 3 years Victron is the only marine electronics manufacturer who is doing the software as open source, so if you don't want to buy the Venus, you can download the software and put it on a raspberry. I started with the Color CCGX and was one of the first ones. Since my one boat is 1 hr away and winters can be very hard It was a blessing to see if shore power was on, to see how much my solar panels provided. I have no clue how much data it uses, but if it was more than 50 - 100 MB/mo I am willing to give you a case of whiskey Then the Venus CCGX came out...the next gen of the color CCGX. and cheaper and more functionality. BUT no little display. But since I always have my 'smart' phone or tablet handy it acts as a display. That was also the principle behind the decision of Viltron to produce without a display. They always would have to buy a display OEM, and pretty much everybody has smart phones/tables with a much better screen, why bother and lower the price of the control unit. The good thing with the Venus is...more functionality....I can turn generator , or inverter on /off remotely. Handy for when friends come and stay a weekend on thereat when I am an ocean away. They don't need to worry . The Venus CCGX also had digital inputs, so it can alert me when a bilge pump goes on, a burger alarm gets triggered, the temperature gets low or high. pretty much anything is possible. Do I want to spend the time putting the software on a Raspberry.....NO....the 200 E / $ savings is not worth it for me. since all the parts are integrated in the Venus. Victron has a lot more features coming for the unit. another nice feat with VRM is with a Venus or color cccx you can update firmware in the MPPT, BMV etc
