  1. Yep they certainly do and like here there are lots of positives and negatives.
  2. It's personal taste/choice really though isn't it, although mine was just a passing comment and I think it is true some would want to do it. It happens with all sorts of transport- cars, trucks, ships, motorbikes, scooters, aircraft, the list goes on. If someone wants to do that its ok but you wont have the purists on side but that's ok too. The picture I quoted initially is what I would like but it would have to be made as a one off bespoke design as opposed to chopping out 12ft from an older boat. Just a personal choice.

  4. Love this boat, I want exactly this at about 58' then convert the loading area.
  5. Have you tried this group on facebook hail https://www.facebook.com/groups/408369335988386/
  6. Thank you for your offer that is very kind. However heading further down the Chesterfield limits my travel when I'm generally only available to sail a couple of days a week, although I had have a look on google and it looks very nice. The furthest I have travelled on the Chesterfield is only to Drakeholes tunnel.
  7. Hi Rose apologies, yes it's for a narrow boat, no more than 58' on the Waterside mooring site there is a space available in front of the pub £1855'ish seems like a lot to me but I am a tight Yorkshireman. I am considering Goole Boathouse and Thorne is just starting to be silly money in comparison, ideally I want to be no more than 45 minutes from the Brigg area especially if I need to do some work on the boat. I do like the clubby type mooring ethos but I don't really want to commit to work party's and the like although it depends on what is required in return for the cheaper mooring. I wont be one to just go sit on the boat in a marina, I want to be out and about.
  8. Gringley Lock, my second ever lock
  9. Can anyone give any info on permanent mooring at Stockwith Basin ie security and general feel for the place?

    Ruston Hornsby

Hi just wondering if anyone could give me any info, heads up, tips when using or tips when buying good or bad on the Ruston Hornsby 2YD. I have looked on the engine listing web page and it gives me bore and stroke dims. and basic layout and thats all I can find on it. Many thanks
  11. Yep you're correct, capstan was the term used when I did my helmsman course- wrongly evidently.
  12. You understood though, which is the main thing but yes, meant stern dolly
  13. I'm probably stating the obvious but I was always told to tie off on the boat at the capstan on the canal side, at least you'll feel the little scrotes get on or it may even make them think twice and move onto someone else.
  14. Cheers, interesting read.
  15. nope, the survey was not in their remit , basically he wanted me to buy it with no survey. edit to add, please message me info on the broker you talk of.
  16. Thank you Tony. Although I am engineer I am not overly familiar with diesel engines, but your info makes perfect sense. Within the last couple of weeks I made an offer on a boat to which they accepted, only to be told that no matter what the outcome of the survey was the boat was still mine as we had agreed a price, it wasn't a very old boat and I'm sure the hull would have been fine but no way was I parting with any money until the survey was done, very strange?
  17. Hi Alan, great response thank you.
  18. As some of you may know I am in the market for purchasing my first narrow boat and of course I am slowly starting to understand the trials and tribulations of making such an investment.... (wrong word probably :). Anyway I have another general question- would you walk away if the seller did not know the engine hours, I have read somewhere to walk away but is it really an issue? Or is it just common sense- Of course you can tart up the bilge, touch up the engine, add new oil, dry off any leaks and to the untrained eye it could look like a well kept and maintained engine until you sail away and all hell could break loose! Conversely it could well have been loved and cared for? Also what if the owner did not know the boats year of manufacture, I see quite a few out there that give a date but after reading their ad it proceeds to tell you 'we think it was built' or 'we have traced the build back to' or 'we completed the build at this date but it was built a century before completion' (Exaggerated a little) I also have spoken to several people all with their own opinions and of different standing in the narrow boat world shall we say, some say 'that you're better buying from the 90s if you want good old British steel but you wont find this in the 00s they're all eastern steel', although to be honest I really can't see this being true?? Or maybe I am just digging too deep for information??
  19. Nope, Appolloduck is still slow (not every time) but I can live with it. Is there a definitive list of crap brokers and crap boat builders
  20. Yes, just read that back, apologies, didn't mean it to come across as it did.
  21. Or maybe just my connection as opposed to been me. I am at work at the moment and and I just clicked 'narrow boats' and it took over a minute to upload, no big deal I suppose just needed a whinge. Edit to add, I have just logged on to a couple of forums, facebook, ebay and now watching a video on youtube and Appolloduck is still thinking about it
  22. No Al, my connection at work is fine, and home is better and my pals in a big city is even better but it really lags, oh and the filtering system seems to be useless, maybe its just me
