  1. Cheers Mike & Alan - yep am on shoreline now for the winter as I have to go where the work is, can't be fussy with an ex and 3 youngish kiddies to house & feed. As mentioned the radiators are pretty useless at the moment and removed the one from the lounge are as that is where the stove is....good idea on the timers, always forget about that but that's pretty good economy as well, I wouldn't need much more than that even without a stove being honest.
  2. ? That was my end reaction every time I thought about it....I like doing my own work, no matter what, and like to think it will all look reasonably ok....fitting new mushroom vents yep...although I learnt a lesson or two on that one as well, like don't assume all holes are jib cut and exactly on 90 degrees to each other.....but cutting a hole in a sloping roof, even with the right tools...just makes me a tad nervous. I'll have to ask about & get some quotes, may end up having to do it myself as time is running out now. ?
  3. Hey there Rusty .... how's you!? Need someone to help me I think as never dealt with fire rope etc. & just a bit nervous at cutting a blooming big hole in the roof myself without real knowledge of flue design....fix the stove in place then chalk a hole & cut it?...sealants, collars, angle on roof? ... Not got oil rads on the boat & eberspracher heater system is like a teenager in the mornings...every now & then up it jumps, smiling and off working as required .....otherwise...roll a dice ?
  4. Hi folks, am interested in this topic...not least because of the pain and anguish of decisions I made when buying my multifuel / wood burning stove back in Nov 2017....My Squirrel ...which was chosen after 3 months of hesitation, contemplation & insecurity .....looks luvverly in the bow corner of my boat ...on the right side for bridges.... BUT!!!.... following a run of personal events in and around the family I never got any further as it is just sat on the hearth surrounded by fireboard but minus one important factor, - apparently a flue is recommended!!?? ?.....Is there anyone you gurus would recommend for Flue design and installation generally?....or better to go through local marina contacts? ....I would like to get mine in despite being a push financially and regardless of happy in cold....I just don't want that damp smell coming back. ....on that note .....any recommendations for low energy electric heaters that you can leave on for a few days whilst away?
  5. Cheers Matty....better late than never ??...I posted this a year or so ago but good advice!...wish I'd thought of it, although I did get an accidental alternative due to the water pump failing on the day I picked the boat up....so we happened to clear the water tank out and start again....so similar ?
  6. ? I was working on the basis that I'd prefer to rub it all clean and give it the recommended number of coats of each layer. Like you say I was hoping the extra work in prep may help it last a bit longer. Many thanks again.
  7. Cheers Tony & all.....the anti corrosion Primer, are there makes that people recommend?.....I need to watch the videos again as I think he mentions something on there but seem to remember someone warning of a primer / mixing it with other paint types.
  8. Hi all, My interior project for bow end of the boat is coming to and end.....many thanks to all who've helped me out in my dark hours. I leant a few wood panels against the side of my boat during the interior work and a few hours of rubbing took the paint off, right back to steel.....ex-hire boat so I guess it has a coat or two of paint but not the prescribed professional number of layer of each application. i am going to repaint my boat myself for now...that is a given, can't afford £6-8,000 for a proper job....more importantly I want to enjoy my boat after a winter, spring(?) & early summer of fixing the galley and saloon. I'll also take my chances with the weather and time my applications as best I can. I need primer, undercoat and top coat.....not cheapest, given the above, but also not dearest..,...unless top coat requires investment.....I am happy to get the good rollers and brushes but need to find a reasonable costed solution for a year or two. Just need the benefit of your ever beneficial comments ......oh and a few of the usual jokes & mickey takes ? Cheers all.?
  9. Hi there, I pondered this for some time but went Thinsulate for flexibility....black side to steel but don't use standard spray glue....I had to keep re-applying then high temp Trim Fix was recommended to me....great stuff!! Nothing sagging or releasing now..... ......oh and the Thinsulate is good as well ?
  10. ? Happy Days....and glad I asked else would have had it wrong way round. Not cut and installed my stove flu as yet, still unsure what insulation to use around that and for how far I need it - will be a twin walled flu...any recommendations - guessing I have to leave the statutory 3/4 flu width before the thinsulate at least...do I fill the area immediately around the flu with rockwool
  11. ? Great stuff thanks for this, thought I'd have to add a layer of insulation over the ribs ?
  12. Cheers Tony, have to admit I did repaint the deck head steel with several good coats of Hammerite but had got my layers all wrong it seems ? ...as per your hint I want to do a decent job that lasts at least 2yrs? Cheers again for that.
  13. Wish I'd had that option ? all a bit in need of 'rip it out & start again' mode....everything up high was rotten, sodden or grotsville. Good tip though ?
  14. I was told never use a Scouse accent when using the term - it took me a few minutes as it was late night when I read it ? Oh OK - not sure why but I thought it was batten outside ...doh! .....what about the exposed steel ribs?....put an insulation layer between the batten & the steel?
  15. Hi there, I know there have been loads of threads on this but I need to ask a more specific question please? I have used Thinsulate in between the deck head ribs and was then going to roll out a vapour barrier secured in place with the battens I need for the deck head choice....undecided as yet. Then I read again and everyone states that no metal should be left uninsulated....given this, should I lay out a thin product like Airtech double foil to cover over the deck head ribs, cover this in vapour barrier and secure in place with battens? - In addition, where I screw the battens in place through the vapour barrier & insulation, should I use a sealant? Sorry folks and I know a few of you will be rolling their eyes but It's been a while as I have not been completing the jobs as planned due to other issues. Cheers all ?
  16. Hats off to you and the detail here ? It it is all a bit unclear and advertising a business that isn't being run from the boat would seem tricky to class as trading....I wouldn't want a solicitors bill trying to get that through in court.....else as others have pointed out, all those old businesses on older boats would be included and a lot of newer ones as well. Think I'll proceed as planned ??
  17. ? Cheers All, what a great batch of responses.....You have given me courage young men and women of the cut!! I shall defy undefined wordings and post what I wish on the side of my boat!! ? ....first stop is a magnetic sign advertising a charity event but that wasn't the base of my original enquiry ?? Once more into the breach dear friends once more!!....well the cut anyway ?
  18. Cheers for the quick response ? Yep that is the query I guess....if you have your own company then you are selling advertising space ....if you have any sense then there is a small monetary value to the recipient.....but unsure if advertising any company is an issue. My boat, my company but two different organisations, don't get me wrong, we're talking peanuts in monetary terms here but that's when you get hit with a big fine. ....loads trade from their boat, do they have to have trader licences?
  19. ? You never know with any licence issuer ....I wouldn't expect a problem but, being negative in this day and age, someone may have a sub-clause somewhere ??
  20. Well technically it is selling advertising space.....even if it is my own company it would be selling.
  21. Hi all, Quick question which may sound a bit simple but unsure of CRT limitations on licences etc. - Can I legally advertise company contact details on the boat? I know many do their own canal boat businesses but just thought I'd better check. Cheers all ??
  22. I've got no insulation or anything on the deck head for the first half of my boat, ....basically a workshop but an £11.95 heater whilst on hook up, for an hour or so in the evening and again in early hours and I've no problems.....don't get me wrong, am looking forward to getting the insulation and stove fitted but!?....what were they expecting......Sunny skies, 24 degrees and birds singing to them when they wanted? ...is there a bluebird on my shoulder, yes it's the truth.........yahdy yah!
  23. Agreed, that was the statement that jumped out at me.....the shops are still there just plan a bit....but then maybe Oxford St or the local Pravda ?..or similar ...was too far to walk Expectations v Normal sense of reality too far apart.........stop being coerced in any walk of life.
