  1. Juts a little idea for Ruston owners to save a little trouble during servicing. For many years now I have changed the felt strainer type oil filter on my 3VSH , its a messy business at the best of times even with care. I discovered that the unit can be replaced by a spin on type which is easily bolted onto the engine block . Its a relatively easy task to make up new 1/4 inch copper pipes using the oil banjo fittings silver soldered onto the new pipe. One pipe feeds direct from the oil rail feeding the main bearings and the other end deposits the filtered oil back into the sump via the crank case. This enables the filter can be spun off and replaced by a modern type with minimum mess and quickly. These are available on EBAY listed as for Lister CS stationary engine. They are made in India but good quality. The Ruston oil filter is a by pass type rather than a full flow in line type and I have run with this filter now for several seasons with no trouble. Hope this tip helps someone.
  2. Thanks for the info, much appreciated. We have a little problem with the 2vth when the batteries are low ( in the morning first stat up) there isn't enough torqe developed by the engine to allow it to build up to normal revs and we have to use a switch to just allow 1 battery to connect then bring the other 4 batteries in when it has started. This may be an issue for you, I suppose it depends on the pulley ratio and the intial power need to build up normal revs. the 10inch pulley to a normal 3 inch pulley on the alternator should do nicely I think. The 3vsh doesn't have the same issue it justs slips the alternator belt if we try to load to much on too quickly. I use kevlar belts now which are a lot better and last far longer.
  3. Sorry I am a little late, just joined this forum with a new ID as my old one passed away and dont really know how to reserect it.... I commented to you way back when you first fitted the Ruston. I have a 3vsh in Sanssouci and Frankie has a 2vth both have more than 2500 hrs on the clock now. They are good engines but need looking after as you know to keep them running sweet. I have a 1vto, 2 spare vth's and a spare complete 2vsh ready for rebuilding now. Good luck with the 1VSH it should power your nb just fine with a nice thumping sound to boot. If you have the time I would be interested to know how you take a drive to your alternator. Is it off the flywheel or through a smaller pulley?
  4. Have you identified which cylinder is missfiring? Slack off the pipe between the pump and injector and this should confirm which cylinder is doing all the work. If could be an air leak on the diesel inflow pipe. Also do you have a gravity fuel feed from a day tank or do you have a fuel pump supplied by the main tank. these have been knwn to cause problems? I have had one where overheating caused a misfire caused by a broken water impellor. The injector cleaning is a sound idea, You can compare spray pattens if you crank the engine over whith the injectors removed but be careful not to have your hands, bare skin or eyes near the spray, diesel is nasty stuff.
  5. Hi Casper, I have a 2vth , the piston rings are stuck fast but the pistons are out and the bearings are good. Would be any use to you? It's off a road roller of some type (Barford ?) and has a single flywheel held by a large nut. Not electric start but maybe your flywheel will fit? I can tale some pics if it's any help.
