  4. Hello Adam Welcome to the forum. I think most private boaters respect and like hire boaters as many of us who are lucky enough to have our own boat started with this mad obsession via the hire boat route. A lot of the most experienced boaters on the cut still hire their boats for various reasons. Private owner’s still get grief from other boaters so don’t take it personally. Rember when you accomplish a fantastic bit of manoeuvring into a lock with strong side winds, there won’t be a soul in sight. As soon as you make a mistake the world and its wife will be there as witnesses! Good luck with your interests John

  7. Hi Gareth This could be caused by a change in pressure whilst the cold water is being drawn off. Kettleing as you call it is the sound of small bubbles being produced by the heating element of the emersion heater. Water will produce bubbles (boil) at various temperatures dependent upon pressure of the water. High boiling point at high pressure and visa versa for low, as in a pressurised coolant system on a car or boat engine, remember the warning about removing the radiator cap (reducing the pressure) whilst the engine is still hot? It could just be that as you draw cold water off you are temporally reducing the pressure in the calorifer. If you do not have a problem of the hot water getting cold too quickly then I would not worry about the NRV. If on the other hand, your cold water is warm or the hot water in the cal gets cold quickly fit the NRV. Hope this helps. John

  12. Thanks for the help everyone. At the moment we only have one or two very small spots (about 2mm across) on each curtain. They don't want to come out with washing but as they can only be seen from the outside we will live with them for a bit longer before the need for new curtains. Thanks again John & Gill

  14. And the moon is one with the bit missing Sorry........... Mind you it is a good example of how far Jupiter is away bearing in mind that Jupiter is 142740 km in diameter and Venus is just 12104 km. So Jupiter is over 11 times larger than Venus but is the smaller point of light.
  15. If you have a clear sky in your part of the world tonight you can still see Jupiter and Venus just to the right of the crescent moon. Look great from a cold but very clear sky in Cambridgeshire.
  16. This is not a new subject Click here Yes I know Bones is not in sea water
  17. May I suggest you get one made from man(woman) made fibre (tin hat on and running for cover)
  18. We have noticed a few small black spots on the lining of our curtains onboard. First question is what is it? Spider poo, mildew or what? We do not have a problem with too many spiders aboard and do not suffer with condensation. Second question is how can we remove them? We have tried washing the curtains in normal washing powder, Vanish and washing soda. Although the spots are slightly lighter, they still remain. Has anyone found a miraculous solution please? Thanks John & Gill

  22. Ah! That’s the impossible question. It’s like asking how long will it take to fill and then empty a lock. They are all different as is everyone’s use of electricity. If it’s any help I can run my domestic type fridge from my inverter for just under two days without running the engine. If I use lights, pumps, heating it could be as little as 5 hours. It all depends what you have to put into the inverter (battery bank) and what you take out.

  24. How much can you squeeze into one year? It was around this time last year that I was in hospital with septicaemia and being told that my immune system was nonexistent. Then being informed that the cause of this was because I had developed “Hairy Cell Leukaemia”. If I remember correctly it must have been about the same time you were diagnosed with your cancer Tony? Unlike you, my treatment was fairly simple. A month of intensive antibiotics to kill of the septicaemia infection followed by a short chemotherapy session (just over two weeks) and of course more tests than you can shake a stick at. After a few more weeks being prone to infection I was able to get back the important things in life. i.e. Boating & . That where my question comes in. Although I have managed to get out onboard Phoenix as much as possible, your exploits on Elemiah have put me to shame. Gill and I did manage a trip from Napton to Middlewich and back, a couple of short cruises and the Warwickshire ring but this was after completing all of my treatment. I admire you resolve in making you recent voyage and the fact you kept me and I’m sure many others enthralled with your voyage. I’m sorry I could not partake in your distance competition but for a few weeks I could not receive or had very poor internet connections. I was also very disappointed I missed you when you passed the Napton area (I would have enjoyed a pint or two with you and Mo). I’m sorry that the last spell of chemo left you feeling like you do, hopefully this will soon pass and you will continue to progress. May I wish you and Mo all the best and thank you for a very interesting thread. John
