  1. From Wigan Flight - there is a 24 hour mooring at Top Lock Red Rock is nice and has a 48 Hour mooring and a local shop open during day about a 10 minute walk down the hill. From Red Rock to Pleasington - Think its not a bad area but be careful around Blackburn centre - in my opinion lots of undesirables and also from previous walks - lots of junk thrown into the canal - not sure after but hope that helps
  2. We brought a boat that didn't have a license and even though we got it at the end of July in order to move it we had to pay from the 1st July - we didn't have the license when we moved the boat but I had e-mailed the CRT with the forms and payment etc and got a e-mail confirmation that the license application had been received and was in process - therefore when I spoke to CRT on the phone they said I could move the boat and put a sign in the window of the boat on both sides saying license in application - we got the license 2 days later - but we had the money taken out for the license before we received it - so we were legit. I know there are lots of boats on the cut without them but I was not going to risk it
  3. It is good sometimes - Barclays are rubbish at times - they have froze my account for a £1 National Express coach ticket saying it was dodgy activity! And some other stupid things, but never about the really big stuff!
  4. On the canal I'm sure it will get more efficient every time
  5. I'm watching it on plus one at the house - I don't get the point of the seeing eye - I mean people have survived for years on boats without a so called balloon 360 degree all seeing eye - this so far is nothing like Guy Martin's a few years back which I personally enjoyed
  6. I saw a boat called Aragon with a painting of Gollum on yesterday!
  7. Haha! I added a few white fenders I found on the front of the boat, which don't need to be there really so added two to side where mooring and its cushioned it slightly. I don't mind interested nosey - but I don't like arrogant nosey. I hate rude people and so far runners are the worst followed by cyclists on the towpath.
  8. Hey all, as a new boater I have been observing boats and seen a good few names already. Out of curosity what is the best, the worst or the indifferent unusual or comical names you have come across - I know this is subjective on individual opinion but just curious of the weird and wonderful names there is out there! I saw one today called - May Contain Nuts - Which I would say is unusual
  9. Ropes are at 45 Have to get a few tyres - I think People seem to be going past quite fast - I know there is some what look like abandoned boats nearby but still! Also the party boats gone by a few times in a few days. What a joy that was! NOT!
  10. Hey all, I am loving the quietness the canal brings but do you get used to the thumping against the bank where you are moored - whenever a boat goes past it doesn't feel very gentle - is it something you get used to? Dogs don't seem to like it either! Also realised how nosey people are!
  11. So you drain the water heater every day or just when you leave boat for a few days? During all weather or just winter? Sorry if it's a dumb question!
  12. So leave the water heater as it is then Alan! Got it
  13. Yeah Betty - I'm too much of a worrier I think I think the boat will be okay - just counting down to the end of Feb when I can be on it full time The boat will gradually move closer to where we currently live - so won't be as worried when can check on it easier when it is nearer. But at least it's 7 months and not years to wait! That's a very good point! Yeah - I like the Banana Boat look Definitely
  14. She is an olden - 1974 but she runs great - surveys all up to scratch - hull is sound - traditional features - ability to make it our own - made by Harborough - we like it and I love the character of the boat ( I know people say avoid a old boat - but if it all checks out - then we were happy) She is a cruiser stern - and love the fact - no engine room as more space - infact she has lots of room in for a 50 footer Feels more spacious than some of the bigger boats I looked at - anyway I'm happy so that is all that counts And also because we got a older one - we saved some money so have ability to get the car - other half wants At the end of the day -the dogs love it - I love it and already after just 1 night - I want to be on it indefinitely Infact - travelled to work from mooring today which took about 55 minutes and just being in a busy populated area - I feel more claustrophobic than I did on the boat!
  15. No we didn't go for that one This one has a Lister SR3 in - so proper marine engine
  16. Hey all, Brought my boat yesterday and managed to stay on it last night and was amazing being on the canal and the darkness and the tranquility sleeping in a semi-rural area - never like it! However me and the boyfriend are unable to stay on it tonight (boo hoo) so I'm a bit of a worrier (been told I should become less of one once I have lived on board for a while and got used to the life style - as just leisure for now until move onboard early next year - YAY) and so I am worrying about leaving it overnight for first time Got so many questions going through my head - like what if we didn't moor it secure enough on the towpath (even though it lasted all last night) What if youths untie the ropes and it goes floating off (semi rural - so usual footfall is people who want to walk/ bike down canal) What if the battery runs out (even though there are solar panels) What if this, what if that, etc I assume it gets easier as you start to leave it - anyone else feel the same the first time they left their boat? I'd like to know I'm not alone - please say I'm not LOL
  17. Well also the other thing is - we don't drive so have to be within a certain distance - just weighing everything up Do you get the boat before the mooring? Or do you secure a mooring before a boat?
  18. Hi all, Does anyone know of any private moorings anywhere around Chorley area or within 5 miles either way. It seems really impossible to get anywhere without having to go to White Bear Marina, but would prefer a end of garden leisure mooring. Allanson Hall Farm - no moorings Wheelton Boat Club - no moorings Ellerbeck Narrowboats - no moorings Botany Bay - no moorings. It is really hard to find places by looking on the internet - as most of them don't come up. So does anyone know of any nice farmers or places that do them around this area? Or do you just keep looking until a CRT one possibly becomes available? Thanks
  19. I do like quiet lifestyle - the car is a NASCAR - I am a Kyle Busch follower Just a interest
  20. I love narrowboats - done several cruises previously and enjoy the quiet lifestyle - I am what people call sad usually as I don't want to conform with modern society in most ways - and I enjoy the outdoors etc
  21. Well it has solar panels, and central heating and a small TV - and the inside has been decked out in a nice wooden finish - Just trying to work it all out - appreciate your comments.
  22. Hi all, How do you know if a narrowboat is worth what the seller is asking for it? Wanted to live on canals since I was young but as narrowboats seem to vary in price a lot - what to make sure I'm getting the best deal for my money? And also does anyone tend to pay the full asking price or how much to offer on a ovno? New to all this, so just seeing people's opinions? Basic gist is - 52 foot narrowboat from about 1989 - wants about £31,500 - has basic kitchen, shower room, bedroom and lounge space. Nice interior - engine looks clean.(not sure what I know about them though) LOL Any thoughts? BTW - as it's a private sale - does everyone get a survey or go through a solicitor for exchanging cash? Or do people just take the plunge and see it as life experience if things go wrong - I do truly believe I can adapt to boat life - I'm just a natural worrier and need to start taking some risks - like my boyfriend says - " We spend so much time saying we will do things and how many people actually do them - if you don't take a risk in life - then you will never know" Appreciate answers in advance
  23. Thanks, new to the boating community - just getting my facts straight - We would be cruising a lot of the time and living on the leisure mooring for a bit through the year - but not have a permanent home residence on land - as able to stay with family etc Just trying to work out what we need to do - as I say if I have to pay tax in anyway I am not opposed - just making sure I know the rules and not break them as the terms of agreement on mooring as very subjective and rather ask people who have boats. Please be gentle - this is my first post
  24. Hi all, Just a quick question and I am in no way trying to get one over on the councils as if I have to pay tax then I will. But out of curiosity, can you be a continuous cruiser and pay for a leisure mooring that you use most of the year?
