  1. Are there records or drawings of the cans produced by the different makers that survive available to view? Were there differences, like we see with boats?
  2. I guess it's due to the thinness of the metal. Makes sense.
  3. I've always considered soldering as being used on smaller items - are the BCM cans soldered completely, or are they welded down the "seam"? Is there a norm?
  4. We've had a direct debit set up for 5 years. Noticed this year the first payment didn't go out (May). Rang up to check and we too were told it no longer renews automatically. Once all is confirmed as the same, payment went out few weeks later.
  5. I can confirm, as a photographer, as long as you are on public property you can take a pic of anyone/thing, excluding the likes of military establishments, etc.
  6. Thanks. Better stop calling them ass cheeks. You learn something new every day
  7. Chester basin used to have moorings at the bottom, next to a lock onto the Dee. Didn't used to get footfall, except for the homeless. Not sure if the moorings are still down there, though.
  8. I've been keeping a look on eBay, preloved, etc. What engine is fitted? A number of ads do not include photos so it would help rule out the definitely nots.
  9. I was wondering how informative CRT's system is. Would it flag if the same number was spotted, let's say, in London and Liverpool in the same week? Because we changed our boats name, and when we rang to update the records we were told you don't have to inform of name changes as all is checked via licence number. Now obviously if no number is displayed I have no idea what they do, but if they've painted a number from a similar boat, that might buy them some time.
  10. We haven't displayed a licence in a while. The condensation used to turn them mouldy and the hassle of having a new one sent wasn't worth it. But the number of hiking groups who would stop in their tracks just to take our licence number because 'this one isn't licenced' was ridiculous. Each to their own, I guess. I would suspect the majority of boats do display a number (I cannot recall ever noticing one missing. I'm not looking for them, though). So, if it were me, I would try to look as "normal" as possible - display a number (random or registered to somebody else) but steer clear of places you're going to be clocked.
  11. Hopefully, knock on the boat and get ananswer. Report it in someway. Or leave a sticky sticker, alla BW.
  12. Local CRT guy says you don't need one in the window anymore, look you up solely on the number. Will flag up that way.
  13. Not on eBay - though it could have already been and gone. Or preloved - a few ads do not post pictures; do we know which engine it has, it will help disregard the definitely nots.
  14. Tuckeys are the well known firm, worth a call. http://www.mjtcranes.co.uk/transport/tuckeys/
  15. The Coventry stretch/arm tends to be low on footfall. Not sure if anyone is near or down there? Has been one or two wanted boats hiding along there. Unfortunately we are in stratford.
  16. Is there a search facility for boat names that people can use to clarify if a boat name is legit? Though, if owners change names legitimately, it depends how often the database is updated.
  17. That one in particular probably needed a service. But a bolinder that recently moored nearby was incredible to listen to - just when you thought it was out of juice it came back to life. Favourite engine for that reason.
  18. The cut has been my home for more than half my life; it and its heritage is in my blood. When they pass unloaded, higher than my portholes, they certainly look like hulks to me. Bigger than the rest of us, stronger than the rest of us. And engines come in all shapes, sizes, and sounds. Moored by one a few years back that did not seem to find a rhythm the entire time it was on. Doesn't mean I didn't find it pleasant. Just how I'd describe the sound, especially when they're starting up. I'm an engine junkie myself.
  19. Good afternoon everyone, A hobby of mine is writing poetry, and I have written a tribute to the Braunston Rally. As there are very few avenues available to be published or seen by people who may be interested I thought this would be a good place to post. I hope you enjoy reading it *fingers crossed* Roll back the years. Time is reversed. As the sleepy fork in this watery road is once yearly disturbed. Metal hulks, relics of yesteryear; Of an age gone by but still held dear, Congregate fender to fender, A handful wide in regal splendour. Powered by a coughing beast; Horses of old, no modern steed. Most for pleasure. Some for pennies. None for speed. Then paraded past an attentive mass, who throw their tuppence into the hat. But no malice intended from these wide-grinned Cheshire cats. Just a nod of friendly rivalry, Quenched by a well earned pint. Or three. Before the dawn when they all disperse, Back to modern lives, so well rehearsed.
  20. http://narrowboats.apolloduck.co.uk/feature.phtml?id=478401 Mountbatten & Jellicoe. I do love the shape of these two.
  21. Is it advised to reapply fertan after sanding? I was thinking of doing this but was worried it may cause problems later on after the other coats are on, especially as we don't have much heat to ensure it dries out. Thank you for moving it. The link in general boating can be removed now if you want. We didn't have primer to hand and managed to borrow some red oxide; thought it was best to get a coating of something on it but possibly should have resisted the temptation.
