  1. I've got various cable runs in m boat but I've not yet got my head around working out their size. Just as a guide, what would be the approximate diameter of 2.5 sq wire, including insulation?

  3. It's a bit difficult to define the term exactly. There have always been farm ponds and the like where the farmer charges a couple of quid a day to fish. Often the fishing is poor. These would probably not be classed as commericals. I'd suggest a water would be known as a commercial if it has most of the following: 1/ Excavated, rather than being natural 2/ Comfortable fishing platforms 3/ Easy access with parking very close to the lake/s 4/ Overstocked, usually with carp, to the extent that it's almost impossible not to catch. 5/ A very long list of rules.

  6. The point is that boats with owner occupiers in them need a health and safety bod to snoop around whereas houses do not. This is illogical.
  7. Some of what you say is true. Commercial fisheries certainly offer better prospects to catch a large bag of fish. I'd disagree with your comment about cormorants though. Cormorants are shy birds, they rarely tolerate humans being close to them. I've seen an odd cormorant or two on the canals but never in the plague like numbers you often see on large lakes and bigger rivers. The canals offer some very interesting prospects for the more thoughtful angler, prepared to work a little harder then he'd need to on an overstocked commercial fishery. I fish probably 200 times a year, I rarely venture from the canal.

  9. I'm not sure that matters? Generally speaking CRT don't spend money on facilities specifically for anglers. The effectively receive the admittedly small revenue from anglers for nothing.
  10. People 'live aboard' houses all their lives, many have access to gas in limitless quantities. Also electricity, solid fuel stoves, all kinds of potentially dangerous things. However they are not required by law to employ a chap with a clipboard every 4 years, at considerable cost, to tell them if their home is safe or not. Until I hear a logical argument as to why this inconsistency is so I'll continue to assume that the BSS, being compulsory as it is, is a shining example of health and safety gone mad.
  11. Anglers' licence fees go to the Environment agency, not CRT. CRT receives revenue from clubs and associations who rent the fishing rights on various stretches.
  12. Not really sure of the value of a taxi, when you could walk quicker.
  13. I mostly live aboard but once a week or so I go to my Mum's for tea, and stay over. I guess that's less than 3 months continuous use so someone will actually be prepared to do the test, a test that's compulsory. That's good news, I guess.

  16. Naturally, no money would change hands
  17. Thanks for the replies. The reason I ask is because I'm toying with the idea of going away in July and August. Lots of boats will be off their moorings at this time. I guess I should ask around locally.
  18. I was wondering: If someone with a home mooring, either private or CRT went off cruising for a period would he or she be able to 'lend' the mooring to someone with a boat of equal or shorter length, or are there specific rules that prevent this?
