  1. Its great they are still on the cut. As long as they are not an obstruction this is where they should stay and become part of the scenery.

Whether a Boat is a Boat in use or a reed bed or garden makes little difference. Its part of history and if it is wooden with some iron ribs it deserves to stay.

I would not advocate this solution for clapped out old steel Boats. They need to be cut up but wood is wood and will go back to nature.

  2. And I was like 'the current lot might get back in before January 2025'.

Don't change horse in mid stream.

There will be financial inducements which may tempt wrong thinking types.

I'd love to know why you think the NBTA are a wing of CART, given that they're nothing to do with them and I guess that CART hate them...

They are working to give the navigation authority more powers over people who live on Boats.

    It seems obvious.

    That IS the case.

I think using the term ccer adds confusion,

sticking to home mooring or no home mooring would make things much easier to understand,

Continuous Cruiser is a recognised term now. It is used on .gov websites.

Initially it was a colloquialism but this is no longer the case.

  4. National Boat Twats Association.

Militant wing of the CRT intent on making living on Boats more complicated.

They drink in the same pub together. damhikt.

It is a scheme to give the navigation authority more powers. I agree with this scheme but am not affiliated to either group.

  5. I am very interested in the PLA view on all this. I seem to recall a while back there were some rumours around that the PLA may look to ban canal Boats or perhaps require skippers of vessels entering the tideway to have a certificate of some sort.

It might be my imagination but I think they may find the presence of leisure narrow Boats a bit of a nuisance.

    Risk assessments &c.

  6. Interesting things happening at South Dock marina. I believe although would need verifying that they are no longer taking visitors in the same way that Limehouse isn't (unless you are a CRT licence holder).

Worth checking these things in advance.

I'm wondering what the St. Pancras Cruising Club have to say about all this?

@Scholar Gypsy is one of the SPCC members I think.

Just a thought. don't know what hours Greenland wharf (dock??) operate but it might be possible to nip across the river in 'office hours' then leave from Greenland dock earlier ??? Probably not but you never know.

Use of the lock is chargeable as the South Dock marina is owned by the council. Well it may be a mooring charge not a lockage charge but same effect.

There is a waiting area but not comfortable.

  8. I'm going to be using Limehouse quite regularly. The conditions don't make much difference for this Boat as it can deal with anything but it is interesting. I wonder what the protocol with the waiting pontoons will be if people turn up later than expected.

It is my theory that it would be convenient for Aquavista and the CRT if the lock became rarely used. I heard they are not taking visitors any more. It is still a CRT lock so is available for licensed craft but of course early exit is very nice. Like a private waterway.

Its upsetting this has changed but not all that surprising.

As ever, CRT's left- and right- hands are entirely unconnected. Limehouse now needs booking through the licensing website -  https://licensing.canalrivertrust.org.uk/PassageBooking - only open for tidal windows within 0800-1600 until Easter and then 0700-1900 (I think).  Brentford needs to be booked separately if you're doing that passage through the same site.

If you want, I've done myself a spreadsheet that shows the available passage timings for this rather than having to paw through their pathetic user interface....

I'd love to see the spreadsheet it sounds brilliant.

So I went online took 8th March as an option and it said '8.08 to 13.56' then the slot was automatically allocated as 13.56. Looking at my tide tables this is -after- high tide so one would not really be getting anywhere. The whole idea is to use the tide to help you along.

What a rubbish setup. I wonder if the PLA has anything to say about this. Discharging a canal Boat from Limehouse after high tide who wants to go inward bound is not safe.

  9. I suppose thinking more positively it could be a bit of extra protein.

The stomach acid would presumably break down the invertebrate's ability to move about.

I think there will be occasions where a tap water supply does not come from municipal mains. It may come from a spring or a well or landfill site.

I live in a permanent mooring, and get my water from a water point on the tow path. I believe this is drinking water as you would expect.

Why do you believe it is drinking water?

I'm slightly intrigued by the reasons behind this comment. I personally think that there are circumstances where a tap may not in fact provide drinking water especially if it was originally installed for cleaning out portable lavatories.

Report this and have it clarified. The result may be attachment of a notice indicating it is not drinking water.

Another approach is to boil the water and if you want a cold beverage have cider or beer.

Maximum boat size seems to have been introduced in the 1960s by BW.

Presumably this was related to maintenance obligations on canals whose future use would be mostly by pleasure Boats.

There was a story on the K&A where the published dimensions were too big and a barge got stuck exiting a lock.

I don't know but seem to think the reaction was to reduce the maximum craft dimensions on the guidance literature.

Length ws defined as 75 feet although the maximum length on the GU South where she operated is 72 feet. Also the drawing give two different cabins i.e. one longer than the other, so I have opted for teh longer version as it will make (to me) a more pleasing model. I have decided to use the BW colour scheme of blue and yellow from when she operated out of Bulls Bridge. I have a couple of question which possibly Tam and Di murrell can answer:

Did BW continue to use the wheel steering or did the convert her to tiller steering,  also was the winch originally fitted to the bow still in place during her BW days?

Finally, attached is my latest model as my previous image of Troy went down well. This one is a freelance gravel pit tug in 1:12 scale.

Lovely. Model Boats are very cool.

I have tagged @Tam & Di in case they don't see your post.

In terms of lock length I think there was a point where GU locks are slightly longer than 72ft but not sure where it is. Regents canal barges were 76ft.

  13. 3P insurance for Boats became compulsory for vessels subject to inland registration or licensing in 1995 when the BS scheme came in. Coincidentally this was the first full yR I had lived on a Boat.

I hate it although never had any issues with BS the Boats always pass and the unsurance gets paid but the principle is dodgy.

I could spend a whole lifetime never making a claim and others could be idiots causing mayhem.

    It is an outrage.

That's because they make Turkish Diesel-ight out of the red stuff.

They usually abbreviate Diesel to just D in this.

I put red diesel in my car frequently, never been stopped yet 🤭

This is an advantage of having a petrol or electric car and some 20 litre carriers.
