  1. Yello, Yeah ... what he said. My idle speed on a Barrus Shire 35 is about 900 rpm when cold. Even on your bigger motor it might be worth slightly raising the idle from 600 to see if than cures the problem. Also you say that the buzzer shut off when you took the boat out of gear at dead slow. This may have simply unloaded the motor from dead slow in gear to allow the revs to rise just enough to shut off the oil pressure buzzer. Just an idle thought ! Malc.
  2. Yello, It'd be worth checking the oil level when cold and making any adjustments then .... failing that, unless you've recently serviced the motor I'd give it an oil and filter change. It's so easy with a pump out sump. It was a hot day yesterday when you came past .. and older oil does lose it's viscocity over time. Malc.
  3. Yello, Sorry Allan .... I thought I may have misread the content. You were the Waterways representitive ? ..... More power to you fella ! I'm most concerned about suggestions that the Sustran rep put forward ..... I seriously look forward to cruising the GU up from Brentford to maybe B'ham way in the future .... and in the past have lived in MK for a few years and loved the canals there. Do your stuff Allan please. Malc.
  4. Yello, Am I reading this right 'Keeping Up' .... you're suggesting stopping us widerbeams using the GU for the sake of cyclist ? I love the MK area and think that I could use it successfully at 10'. Surely I must have misread your post ? Malc.
  5. Yello, As a regular cyclist, I can't say that I'd look to ban cyclist from a beautiful British infrastructure such as the towpaths ..... but as with all locks on The Thames, there is a cycling ban through the locks. OK ... Thames locks are manned and the rules are enforced around my stretch. Common sense (once again) should prevail ..... but sometimes is lacking. Malc.
  6. Yello, Sorry for the thread hijack !! but : I'm looking to make my barge more 'cruise' friendly ie: without the inverter running overheads ..... zo .... if I can stop the overheads of my Sterling inverter whilst cruising then hooray ! Mine was originally built as a liveaboard hooked up ..... but I love to cruise. Has anyone done the regulated bypass thing on a biggish flat screen please ? Malc.
  7. Yello, I our recent threads on LED strip lighting, we discussed voltage stablising unit that could protect against over voltage and also step up under voltage real time. I would think these could apply to this application ? Malc.
  8. Yello, A gas TV !!! Now that's a first for me ! I have a 5 year old 32" flat screen that I use as a PC monitor as well, that I was considering bypassing the transformer on .... but of course as has already been mentioned, with a regulator. Malc.
  9. Yello, I was chatting about 12V TV's with a knowledgable neighbour the other night .... he seems to think that most 240V TV devices step down the voltage considerably at some point in the power supply module. I'm wondering if we have any TV experts that could confirm as whether this is to the extent of 12V ? Cheers Malc.
  10. Yello, That seems quite reasonable Nicknorman ....... is that a DIY price or what the yard are charging you per 4 litres to apply ? Being a 2 pack ... does that mean breathing apparatus and a spray gun ? Ta Malc.
  11. Yello, Wishing you and yours happy days on the water my friend Cheers dude .... Malc.
  12. Yello, Well thanks to all who replied to my 'trespassing event'.... Your thoughts have made me think carefully about my reaction / over reaction on that night. It's true to say that we'd had a great night out and alcohol had been consumed. My reaction in daylight would have been considerably different, but the fact of the time of day and the remoteness of our mooring played a part. Plus we couldn't just move on to another mooring. We did consider that, but in the pitch black on The Thames without another available space made it a non starter. My air rifle was a gift from an ex army friend years ago .... it's not been used by me. BUT .... when faced with an unknown threat in that situation, it was included in my deterent plan. I definately don't want to appear as a gun toting yob on this forum ..... that's so much not the case. Happy days ..... Malc and Me Julie.
  13. Yello, Just an aside ..... are you THE Psycloud of GSX1400 fame ? Malc.
  14. Yello. " In the same situation as you I think I'd have asked the chap nicely to fish from the bank.... " Mike .... seriously .... do you honestly mean that given the same situation I've had to describe a number of times, you'd have done as your comment states ? I'd normally rather walk away from a fight that I can't resolve with words or has little effect on my life .... I'm not a coward by any means but there are some situations that require more forceful actions. Like having unknown persons on your home at 1am ! I started this thread to try and ease my head ...... not sure if I did the right thing. Not sure if the little trespassing twat would have pulled a knife on me and stuck me in the gut whilst I had his collar ? Think about it one more time please. Unless of course you're a saint ? Malc. Yello, Julynian ..... you ARE no doubt correct. End of ........but that's just not what happened. Respect .... Malc.
  15. Yello, After a great rock gig .... seeing a load of friends .... having a good few beers .... then finding sh*t happening on your home is still a shock. You know what I'm saying Starcoaster .... you've been there in a shock situation. Men have test ... teststost .... bollox ! That sets in unfortunately. Malc.
  16. Yello, No ... I simply kept a watch on the stern with the hatches open and a variety of deterents available should the worst happen ..... these 'weapons' were ( in order ) a camera, a tiller arm and a .22 air rifle (unloaded). Nobody wants to provoke a war ..... we left at first light as I'm quite fond of Me Julie, my windows and my possessions. Malc. ..... let's leave it there .....
  17. Yello, " Yes quite, I'm the one whose disconnected from reality. But hey, I have high hopes of living to see my 40's. " Well Starcoasterbabe ..... I'm 50 and a Grandad .... and I have high hopes to retain my boat and possessions for a good while longer. Malc .... x
  18. Yello, { You did however get some support for your stance,,, } Thank you 'The Dog House' ..... I will take some small comfort in that. Even though there does appear to be an element of ... "it'll never happen to me" .... "maybe he's taking a picture @ 1am ?" ..... "shall I put the hot chocolate on ?" .... Malc.
  19. Yello, @ Starcoaster ..... yes Me Julie did try to call the police after the event. After the event means it's not an emergency, therefore you're asked to dial another number which Me Julie's mobile tariff would not let her do. We would have moved to another mooring but it was 1am and we don't yet have night cruising lights fitted and the night was very dark ..... so that was a non starter. Maybe you do actually live in LaLa land ? Malc.
  20. Yello, Well thanks for all your opinions .... some of you must live in LaLa land out in the sticks. But this is London ..... The Thames ..... at 1am in the morning on a dark secluded mooring. I will defend my home against burglary and vandalisism. The fact was that under these specific circumstances, I fully believed that my home was being robbed or at least broken into. My first impression wasn't to throw the twat into the cut ... thank you gazza .... it was to ascertain who and what person or persons were trespassing or theiving from my home. Whether it happens to be a stupid, disrespectful teenager or a mob of thieving thugs .... I will still defend my home. Does anyone know how hard it is to call the local police station from a mobile ? Maybe you all live and moor in places where knife crime, burglary and trespass are OK .... or non existant ? I simply thought I'd air the point to the CWF massive and see what you thought about people aboard your precious boats at 1 AM in the morning on a dark night in London. I like to think I'm a reasonable dude ..... that's why I didn't lob him in The Thames or steal his tackle. I laid it out on the bank .... ready for him to retrieve. Malc.
  21. Yello, Well the next time you come home to your boat at 1am in the morning, on a very dark night to find other unknown persons aboard the rear deck of your home, ...... tell me what or are going to think or do ? Malc.
  22. Yello, On the last night of our recent trip holiday cruise, we went to see a fine band called 'Bad Influence' at The Poinz in East Molesey on The Thames. A good gig .... BUT .... on arriving back to our barge moored at Hampton Court at 1am, I discovered an intruder on the deck. Thinking that he was in the act of burgling my home I took an aggressively defensive attitude to him ! It was after a short moment or two of collaring him and asking WTF he was doing on my boat at this time in the morning, I discovered he was fishing off my barge and had laid all his kit out over the roof. He was about 17 years old and had only a couple of words of English to his vocabulary .... "I'm sorry" and " my Uncle", and a very obviously Eastern European accent. It would have taken no more than a shove for him to have been floating down The Thames into Molesey weir ..... but being a man of alledgedly reasonable character, I sent him on his way with a big F*ck O** ..... minus most of his tackle. I then laid his fishing rods and tackle out on the bank and waited. Sure enough his uncle came around with him and an aggressive attitude about 30 minutes later, asking why I'd scared his cousin ? WTF !!! ..... the little trespassing tw*t was very lucky to get away without a long, fast swim .... and he even got his tackle back ! Nevertheless it made for an uneccessary early morning vigil with camera, air rifle and tiller arm at hand, to ensure my barge was safe from a mob handed attack from his East European brothers. This was in Hampton Court .... a respectable place I hold dear and love to bits .... What is the world coming to ? Malc.
  23. Yello, OK ... my apologies. Due to being unable to re-start my Sterling 3 in 1 1500W inverter, the diary fell on it's sword. But ... that's not to say we didn't have a great time cruising down the Wey and Godalming Navigations ! From the start of our cruise it felt like traveling on a river / canal, as opposed to the big old Thames that we currently live on. It took much more concentration to take our 50 x 10 Boston style barge down the meandering navigation. I loved that ! .... being a bit of control dude. A number of chimney off bridges for us and all manual locks stuck out of the way in the middle of awesome Surrey countryside. I can honestly say that there was not a single minute of unpleasant countryside during the entire 7 days we spent on the 'Wey and God'. I may be bias as I'm a Surrey boy, but everything including the city of Guildford looked beautiful from the navigation. Highlights were meeting the good folks at TLC boat yard, just past Byfleet Boat Club, who are a couple of skillful and generous people. Meeting Dave Duffield Marshall .... the weirsman at Send .... a character and a very generous spirit with great future contacts for us. All in all a super holiday break down the most beautiful of navigations we've yet to see. Thoroughly recommended. Malc and Me Julie.
  24. Yello, " Day One " After a lot of faffing about, we made it easily down to Hampton Court in just the four hours. The Thames lock keepers are sooo cool. Always friendly and they remember faces very well. Had to moor on a concrete slab opposite Ash Island ... a short walk to 'The Albion' in the high street and a good old natter with some good friends. Then we heard that Gary Brewer was playing at 'The Poinz' in Molesey so we supped up and strolled down there. Great gig ! ... Loud valve amp blues from Gary with his little Les Paul Junior from the fifties. Consumate drums and bass from the band. Staggered home to 'Serenity' and kipped out. Today we're going to fill up down at Thames Ditton Marina .... then back up to Shepperton to start our cruise for real down the Wey Navigation. Malc and Me Julie.
  25. Yello, We're going to try a cruise diary type thingy on the forum .... nothing serious .... just a bit of fun because we're too busy having fun ! Malc .....
