Thanks for your advice! I think we will probably try the trip up the Coventry. I did notice the railway running pretty close for much of the journey, but looks like its not much of an issue. It's a part of the system we have not visited before. Maybe a quick visit up the Ashby canal on the way back down if time permits. Mind you, after saying that, we'll probably end up in Fenny Compton!! Could always just wait and see which way the boat is pointing when we pick it up!

Hi All I'm just after some opinions. We are hiring a boat from near Newbold on the Oxford Canal in a few weeks time for a 5 day mid week break. We have decided on a choice of 2 routes, either north and on to the Coventry towards Fazeley, or south to Fenny Compton. Appreciate any advice on the route choice! Thanks

We went through Braunston Tunnel last week. Had the stove lit, but not producing any visible smoke in the daylight. Anyway after a few hundred yards I was surprised how much smoke was building ahead of the boat. Behind us was crystal clear. The boat appeared to be acting as a piston forcing all the smoke ( or what little of it there was ) ahead of us. Made me wonder at the time how it must have been in there in the days of steam tugs.
