  1. Mooring places etc are clearly laid out in the various maps but an enhanced version with personal notes about local scenery, local problems, local scroats etc would be brilliant.
  2. I am now giving some thought to buying secondhand but it would almost certainly mean ripping out much of the inside and rearranging it. My first thought is about moving the stove ( maybe coal, maybe diesel ) If I moved it would the resultant hole in the roof be fillable with a mushroom vent or would that be to simple ?
  3. The possible demise of reeves has really set me thinking. I will freely admit it puts me off the idea of buying a new sailaway...... but if we all stop buying new then I can see a few more going the (assumed) same way. So I have been sat here trying to decide exactly WHY I want ( wanted?) new rather than secondhand and I think most of it boils down to the fact that I can see how good or bad the insulation is with a new sailaway. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to tell with a boat that has already been lined out without almost destroying it. Very important to me is insulation
  4. This is very sad, if true, my shortlist has just got dramatically shorter.
  5. I assumed he meant that some 'older' boats had longer swims whereas modern builders are loath to lose the cabin (cupboard ?) space that this would cause.
  6. I am fast coming to the opinion that there is nothing in boating that is cut and dried. So many decisions to make
  7. Mmmm. Hopefully they are just swapping hosts or some such. They are on my shortlist.
  8. You make some interesting points mrsmelly. I had pretty much decided they were not necessary but you have me thinking again. Is the output from these things 'smooth' enough ( if you know what I mean ) to use for all appliances ?
  9. But then the engine would have to be running...... in which case it would be replacing the 3kw ( or whatever) that the batteries were putting through the inverter. No ?
  10. Hi I am currently looking at build prices and specs etc for a 60 - 62 ft cruiser stern. One of the options is to have a 230V 3.5kW engine mounted generator fitted ( at a price of over £3000 ) but I am not sure what it is exactly or what the actual benefits would be. Presumably it would only work while the engine was running and I could get the same thing from an inverter. If I want 230 volts while the engine is not running I would need the inverter anyway. Presumably getting the 230 volts while moving etc would be less stress on the batteries than using an inverter but would the benefit be worth 3K+ ?
  11. 'we' being ? edited to add - Did that sound rude ? I was just wondering who you worked for

  17. Haven't ever heard of this. Where will it be, Castle Keys ?
  18. Elsan disposal at Lower Heyford on the southern Oxford is £2 but that is at a private boat hire place so I suppose that is fair enough. £5 ? Thats just a croc of sh**

  20. I saw sheets of inch thick foam that was for soundproofing in Homebase. IIRC it was covered in foil much like Kingspan or Cellotex but the foam was soft like foam rubber. Cannot remember the price but it seemed reasonable. Worth doing IMHO. I love these boats you dont hear until they have passed you edited for clodhopping spelling

  23. Oh the beauty of it. Dont know where you are, and dont care either.
  24. By the time you have paid for all the batteries, inverter and everything else you would need to keep an electric oven running you probably cannot afford anything to store anyway
