  6. Looking for bed bugs. I hear they collect them there.
  7. I ( for one ) am quite happy to accept that you are a different Smudge. Writing style speaks volumes and is not that realistically changeable. However the type of question you have asked is just as difficult to answer as no two people are the same or have the same expectations of life. If you do the things you say you will happily do, ( find wood, agency work if needed etc ) then yes it would be possible to live on that amount. Many must be doing it ashore ( though not perhaps from choice ) I personally have always doubted the practicality of finding wood for fuel. Lots of people looking for it, needs seasoning etc etc.
  8. Off topic I know but.... There was a program on TV a while ago where someone was asking why the Iphones are built in the far east rather than at home making local jobs. Apples answer was that the Iphone only costs about £5 to make and only £1 of that goes to wages in China. Interesting for a phone costing around £500
  9. There is probably a 'known' or 'correct' way of doing this. i wonder if we know anyone who could get a definitive document on the matter from an indisputable source. Perhaps an insurance company for instance ???
  10. I just cannot believe this thread. This question has been asked many times. Never before has it got to post 4 without someone saying CORKSCREW. Have a great trip

  12. Hi My son wants to take his 21 ft tupperware out of the water for the winter and put it in his car park ( or on my driveway) I am wondering if anyone has a trailer in the Oxford area that we could borrow ..... and if anyone knows if you can then get it off a trailer onto blocks or some such without a crane.
  13. If all marina toilet blocks are like the ones I saw at Mercia I am not suprised people like to use them. they were bigger than my house and incredibly smart and clean.
  14. So if passing was difficult, for either boat, all you have to do is wave them into the next lock ahead of you No ?
  15. The poor wasp will be totally lost. Why not do the decent thing, turn round and go back to where you were before letting him out.
  16. Putting it in reverse to slow down is a bit of a beggar though. Does the engine no good at all.
  17. It is also worth saying that you can often/sometimes get around the 'residential' laws when living in a leisure marina by taking your boat out for a tour for a couple of weeks twice a year.
  18. We have just returned from out first week on a (hire) narrowboat. At tickover the boat was bearable, at anything above that the noise, rattle and vibration was unpleasant to say the least. The one part of the holiday that bothered me was having boats catch us up. None of them said anything but I was conscious of the fact that I would be holding them up and that made me feel uncomfortable. We pulled over and let them past whenever possible ( always a good excuse for a cuppa ) but the banks of the T&M seem very shallow and we frequently grounded in the process. I really envied those boats who could slip along quicker with hardly a sound ( or wash )
  19. Well, certainly no further than your lowest sink outlet or whatever

  21. I was at Fradley junction on the hire boat last weekend. More like Clapham Junction. Total chaos, great fun. Cafe was good though.
  22. There is a cure. Come sit at my desk, see that red button in the middle ? All you have to do is press it. just press it once and your addiction will be gone. You will be able to neglect your boat for a while and get on with your real life, you will be able to look after the garden again, you will have time to wash and polish the car, clean the house windows. All you have to do is press it. Go on, press it. go on, Go on, Go on. PRESS IT.
  23. Can I ask how many people in the queue(s) are on hire boats ? The contract on ours said we would have to pay £50 an hour if late back.
  24. I knew there had to be something different about boaters. I run out at 10, damn, I am never going to fit in here.
