"Must get myself a spare alternator belt" I thought. Off to a local Well Known And Respected Chandlers.
"Hello, I'd like an alternator belt for a B*** (rhymes with Peter) 38 please"
"Certainly. I have one here. That'll be £46 please."
"##@xxx & $$$ £££££".
"Yes you're quite right. B*** assume you will be daft enough to pay that much. Go to a motor factor's."
"Yes I jolly well will. Thank you. Goodbye".
Some weeks later, today in fact, at a local Well Respected Motor Factor ---
"Hello, I'd like an alternator belt please. It says 6K 1240 on it."
"Certainly. I have one here, That'll be £14.98 please"
"There you are. Thank you. Goodbye"
I'd forgotten all about motor factors. Shouldn't have, really. Last time I went into one was about 30 years ago when I needed two rear shockers for a '70 Cortina. Didn't have any in stock but "As it happens, I've got two new Armstrong competition fully adjustables for a MkII in my garage. Come in tomorrow and you can have them for £20." Built like a couple of howitzers and I had to run them fully wound off on both comp and rebound otherwise they were solid rods of steel, but boy was I chuffed. Rest of the suspension was completely shagged, of course.
From now on, all my motoring and maritime mechanical needs will be met somewhere other than Halfords.
