  1. In my car repairing days we used to use 'sugar soap' to clean our hands. A squirt of washing-up liquid and a couple of spoonfuls of granulated sugar thoroughly rubbed into the hands removed all the grime and oil when it was rinsed away.
  2. I made it clear I was speaking only for myself. I'm not a 'proper' boater (holidays and weekends only) so I'm unlikely to get frozen in. Just gave my point of view. Wouldn't dream of criticising others for their choice.
  3. Well, personally speaking, when I've dumped through my dump-through I don't ever want to see the result again. I don't want to be lugging it down the towpath and emptying it into some foul-smelling hole. I certainly don't want to be emptying the liquid element every day and shovelling out the solids no matter how 'green' it makes me feel. I gladly pay someone else to pump it away every so-often.

  7. Partial reopening Sat 21 May. CRT notice here
  8. It sounds like you have set your heart on the first boat you've seen. For goodness sake take a look at as many boats as you can to give yourself some perspective. That one looks as if it's been freshly painted in order to sell. There are lots of fantastic used boats around for that money and when you find one get your own survey done.

  10. Oops! That was posted last night and fuelled by 3 pints of Old Speckled Hen.
  11. Go on, confess it. You don't slow down quite so much for an empty boat or one that looks as if it might be unoccupied (look for the padlock). I mean, where's the harm in making an empty boat bob around a bit? They're designed to do that aren't they? And besides, there's nobody on board to shout at you. Boats are designed with bobbing in mind. That's gonna be my slogan from now on.
  12. Closed UFN at lock 19. CRT notice here
  13. Why? Personally I've always found the staff at the Fleur-de-lys a bit patronising and the prices inflated.
  14. I came across this interesting youtube video explaining the science behind galvanic isolators.
  15. Have you rung whilton?

  21. If you suspect an exhaust leak look carefully at the exhaust lagging. The area of the leak should begin to show signs of sootiness or blackening of the lagging. The slightest pinhole or crack in the exhaust will cause fumes to escape.

  25. Why does it bother you? Most people seeing it wouldn't know your name anyway. But if you must cover it, I'd say it's easier and cheaper just to sand it down and paint it over yourself, which you intend to have done eventually anyway. Lots of good advice in the forum for prep. and painting if you do a search..
