The daughter's birthday party...on the boat...

4 teenage girls can just about manage to have a party in a back cabin, albeit a tight squash when it came to where they slept... Luckily this was a week ago and the weather was glorious so most of the time was spent outside. Messing about in the rowing boat..     I had quickly knocked up a guard for the engine's flywheel in case one of the girls wondered into it. I think the guard looks ok, so with a few improvements I may make it permanent.

Sleepy Hollow video with new prop.

Sleepy Hollow has been in dry dock this week having it's first blacking and the 22x22.5 prop was removed and replaced with a 21x18. With the old prop the engine would struggle in tickover and the boat was too fast. With the new prop the engine is fine even in tickover and the boat, although still fairly quick, is much better.   A video taken today of our short chug. We just need to alter the exhaust as we feel the silencer works a little too well.

A few more pics...

Sleepy Hollow..   Refitted the head lamp after wiring a new light into it. Mabel decided to get in the pic too..   Reclaimed ships shelves above the bath.       Toilet doors made using a wooden frame clad in white plastic sheet, they have turned out rather nicely.   Not much work done on Casper.   Moved the tv into it's own cabinet, hiding the cables under the gunwale. This cabinet was due to go into Sleepy Hollow's engine room but I nicked it..   The throttle chain on

Casper's back cabin stove...

We lined around the stove with Aquapanel, which is heat proof and water proof, not sure the water proof bit is all that useful? It is said to offer 30 minutes protection from fire and is not too expensive at £15.99. I may tile over it later.. We had the fire alight to test it, but it's the first time i've lit it since I painted it and the paint smelt really bad so we had to have all the doors open. After a while the paint stopped smelling...   On Sleepy Hollow the long job of trimming the ca

New little diesel engine...

It's actually about 1960 so not very new. It's a Petter PAZ1, 1.5hp at 1000rpm. Not sure what i'll do with it yet but i'll put it on a trolley so I can wheel it around..   My brother has been fairly busy doing some trim in his boat, i'll post some pictures when I remember to go there with the camera..

Backcabin...

I finally put the matress in for the cross bed on Casper. Because of the design of the boat the cross bed is 6'5" long and 4'6" wide.   The daughter still prefers to sleep on the day bed...

Some pictures of the 2 boat fit outs.

Casper; The speed wheel throttle, now fitted with plumber blocks, which were very cheap at 4 for £10.50!   Old brass bed knobs as is the tradition...   12 volt brass lamp, which looks the part.   Sleepy Hollow;   My brother didn't like any of the 12volt lights for sale so he has adapted these rather different lights to use 12 volt LEDs which only draw 4 watts.   We made a start at the wiring in the engine room.

I've made a trolley for the little boat...

Well, it was a nice day so it seemed a good idea to spend it in the garden doing some welding... I nicked the frame work from the pedal car I started building a while ago and which I had decided I would never finish. The wheels are from my daughter's old scooter, which is why they are pink . It just needs a bit of a sand and some paint and will be finished. It's very light, being mostly made from 20x20x1.6mm box section and carries the boat well.

I've bought a little plastic boat...

It's made from very tough plastic so should be good for those trips along the river severn on the way back from the pub...   I've also bought an old oil pressure gauge which suits the Ruston perfectly, having a range up to 30psi and the Ruston running at 20psi. Only cost me £5.00 and it's about 4.5" diameter and a nice brass piece...

Riding a penny farthing...

My daughter that is, not me... It's her 1957 penny farthing which she takes to vintage shows.     This was at the Welland Steam rally at the weekend. She spent most of the evenings riding the bike around with her friend..

Another boat engine purchased...

A bit different from my normal find, a British Anzani outboard motor, from about 1954. It's 3hp 2 stroke petrol. I just need a little dinghy for it, but until I find one I may make a mounting bracket for my canoe to take it I think it's probably the prettiest outboard i've ever seen..

A weekend of boat work...

Myself, my brother and our dad worked on the boats over the weekend. We had a big diesel genny and the welding kit and set about completing a small list of welding jobs which needed doing. First we fitted a new exhaust for Sleepy Hollow with a proper silencer as the old fire extinguisher expansion box was too noisy.. This job went very well with no problems. We started the HR2 and the exhaust is now very quiet, too quiet for me... Though the engine is still noisy...     We then fitted the t

Braunston 2011

Myself, my brother and my daughter managed to gain a ride on narrowboat Chertsey for the parade on Saturday, for which I offer my thanks to them. We arived early, meeting up with Bones and the crew of Chertsey and waited for the off, and waited...... When we did set off we came to a halt in a jam of old working boats.. It took ages, over 4 hours to do the small parade, having to stop and hover for ages while boats struggled past each other. The weather was nice and we had a great time, just need

Front steps...

My brother has made the front steps for Sleepy Hollow. They are made from the off cuts of oak from the kitchen worktop and the sides are 8mm thick mild steel left over from the boats base plate.. I think they look rather neat..

Kitchen photos for Sleepy Hollow..

The kitchen, almost finished. The oak worktops took a bit of cutting but have come out well, just need oiling for protection. There is an overhang which will be used as a small breakfast bar, with stools beneath.

Photos of Sleepy Hollow's fit out so far...

A rather nice little "Belfast" style sink, a good purchase off Ebay... The small tiles, which were glass, were a nightmare to cut and meant it took us ages just to do this small area..     The larger "Belfast" style sink, another ebay bargain at £10...       My brother's method of making the internal window frames, using plywood and cutting strips of thin-ish plastic and bending them round the inside of the frame. They do look rather neat and cost very little. All the lining and woo

Fitted the steel guard..

It's almost disappeared from view but it's in there doing it's job. It was really hard to fit on my own, it's fairly heavy and holding it up in place while marking for fitting holes and then screwing and bolting up took an age.. The flue for the stove cuts into the side of the cupboard so i've made the steel guard to keep the flue out of the cupboard and shield it. I've also lagged the flue with exhaust lagging, though this may not have been necessary but I had some so decided to use it. It's tu

Casper's back cabin...

I've been doing a bit more work on the back cabin, but I had a bit of trouble with the laptop as my Dad tipped his tea over it and for a while it stopped working... It started up again after drying for a day or two but the sockets on the one side wouldn't work, meaning I couldn't load photos onto it. For some reason today it worked again so here's a picture.     We've also done a bit in Sleepy Hollow, hopefully I'll be able to load some pictures later.

Refitting the stove and the gas on Sleepy Hollow..

My brother, with the help of our Dad and 2 friends, fitted the gas pipes and the cooker in Sleepy Hollow. The chap who did the pipe bending did his usual neat job, he's had quite a bit of experience. My brother had hoped to use the hob straight away but realised that he had left the part the kettle sits on at home.... I escaped this job but it seems he had enough help without me... I re-fitted the solid fuel stove in Casper. I had taken all the parts home and cleaned them and painted the stove.
