Biggles Posted May 16, 2012 Report Posted May 16, 2012 (edited) I was involved in a thread but can't find it now about the MPPT that was mentioned and I had just bought. It's one of these So at last the sun came out today and I was on the boat. At midday (ish) I looked at the solar remote panel. It was reading 13.1v and charging at 31amps. Since fitting the solar panels I have hardly had to run the generator so I guess they must be working. I'm not sure how this compares with other manufactures MPPT's of much higher cost, but this was part of the conversation My panels are not angled to the sun just fixed to the roof. The total peak of my panels is 490w When I took the reading the panels were producing 28v. Their peak is 37v. So how does this look? Edited May 17, 2012 by Biggles

Assuming that the meter readings are correct / accurate, I would say that is pretty much perfect.. 13.1 x 31 = 403 watts and panel and system "losses" are at least 15% and frequently over 25% if the panels are not optimally orientated, so nothing wrong with the system IMHO.... If the batteries are only at 13.1 volts with 31 amps flowing in, I would guess they are at a fairly low SoC though unless you were consuming much as well... What physical area do the panels take up ?
