We have one of the above and I wonder about the cleaning pin or rather how it seals and what if the seal fails / melts....

We had a serious over-fuelling event and the whole thing roared, whoomped and became bright cherry red from bottom to top ( we were fearful of a serious boat fire) but I could see what was developing and had managed to turn off the fuel tap ( behind the stove rolleyes.gif) before it was impossible to get near it. I am remoting the fuel shut off valve and installing an extra automatic shut off valve

The concern is that there looks like a mark from a melted seal ( O-Ring) on the cleaning pin, and I wonder if this was an O-Ring seal and it has melted, and what the consequences of this are / whether I should dismantle and replace ? The main concern is whether it will allow fuel to leak past and impair control or cause fuel to be leaked outside of the stove ?

I haven't had a good critical look at it since, so am not familiar with the general arrangement, but any input would be welcome.

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick

I know what you mean - I have had mine cherry red the odd time too..

Haven't melted the O ring yet tho' !

The O ring will, if it has failed, allow fuel to leak out of the stove onto the hearth.

I guess the only way of knowing for sure would be to test fire it with a small drip tray in place.

I'm afraid I have no idea what the seal comprises of but I'm sure a call to Lockgate would be fruitful.

I think I have the manual in pdf form somewhere - if you need a copy you could PM me an email address and I'll forward it on to you...

Good luck

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reply and info..

I think I have a (user?) manual on the boat but would appreciate the .pdf in case yours tells more than I have...

The guy I spoke to did't seem to know the depth of technical detail I needed - perhaps their techy was not in ...

I will PM you my e-mail address

Thanks again...

Info sent Nick... Good luck. ;)

For other interested parties a small bit of info from the manual regarding the cleaning pin

The cleaning pin is made of 6 mm dia. stainless steel, which slides in a brass T-piece, through a rubber O-ring, which can be changed in the event of leakage.

The cleaning pin is used to keep the fuel supply to the burner free from the products from combustion (soot etc.). Under constant use the cleaning pin should be pushed in and out a few times every 14 days to keep the fuel inlet free from obstruction.

It is important that the cleaning pin is not left pushed right in whilst the stove is in use, as in this position the end of the pin extends into the combustion chamber and the end of the pin can be coated in soot and slag thus preventing its withdrawal. There can also occur heat transference through the pin which destroys the rubber O-ring.

The O-ring can only be changed when the brass T-piece is removed from the stove.

What you need is a compression seal which you can buy for about four quid from Harworth Heating (www.oilstoves.co.uk) It looks like this:

NB for those who have Refleks/Bubble stoves, Harworth has some excellent downloadable manuals, which is where I lifted the diagram from.

Many thanks - all received... I will have a look at it again and see what state it is in ... I have two O ring selector sets, so optimistic I have a suitable one to replace it with...

Thanks for the tip and diagram of the cleaning pin Koukouvagia - it seems that the compression seal is possibly compromised as well.. I will see if I can get a spare off Lockgate..

Is Lockgate the best / only place to get such spares ?

Can you give a link for "Haworth" - I haven't been able to find their site yet, just things related to the place..

Thanks,

Yep - look at the link on post #5.

Oops - Sorry I mis-spelt the name. It's Harworth, not Haworth. :)
