Chubb41
Hi all ? does anyone have any experience with Volvo Penta 2001 not starting white smoke out the exhaust seem bleeding might be a problem? And there doesn’t seem to be heater plugs on this model ? thanks chris
Iain_S
The white smoke is most likely unburnt fuel, so fuel is passing through the injectors. Did the engine used to start? Has anything been done to it since it last ran? Is it turning over on the starter as fast as it used to?
Chubb41
Hi thanks I bought the boat of a friend BUT it hasn’t run for two years but he had had it rebuilt and only done9 hours there seems to be a lot of compression But will do a test on that in the week the engine did run and funny you should say about the turning over a lot of cars won’t fire if to slow turning over could be the injector Dumping fuel in ? Thanks Chris
Iain_S
If a diesel isn't turned over over fast enough when starting, there can be insufficient heat developed to ignite the fuel, especially if the engine has been standing for a while, There are a few ways round this, for example, spin up with decompressor engaged, so that the engine is turning faster, and then drop the decompressor, or heat at the inlet manifold (a blowlamp can work wonders, but make sure the air filter is either removed or not inflammable!) If the engine has stood for two years, it's possible the piston rings are sticking, which will reduce compression (sometimes to zero), although if compression seems good, that is less likely.
