To what, though?

 

Some boats have all the battening fixed to the internal framing of the shell, or to dedicated brackets fixed inside the shell.

 

However others actually rely on some or all of it being screwed through holes from the outside of the shell, with the countersunk screw heads subsequently being hidden by an appropriate filler.

 

The considerations that apply to each method could be rather different.
