Re-locating from Ireland to England

:P Help and advice needed please! We want to buy a widebeam for live-aboard, 2 bedrooms, residential mooring, with storage for motorcycle if poss! Is this going to be a tall order? We are currently living in Ireland but are moving back to England either in the Kettering or Skelmersdale area where we would commute to. Could anybody advise us of a good boat-builder or marina that may accomodate all our requirements? I am sure that this is not going to be a quick process, so does anyone know if it is possible to hire a boat for a few months while our own is being built? Sorry if these are questions that have been asked many times...!

Not a tall order at all but not something to be rushed into either!

You need to have a good look first at what your budget will buy you, residential boats are fairly closely related to the housing market and prices tend to be more. Buying a boat is far from the cheap option more of an alternative.

If the budget will stretch to a new boat then although the costs will be more than a 2ndhand one your investment is fairly safe, boats of this nature will normally appreciate in value rather than depreciate, so if things change you can normally recover your investment.

Moorings are available but you have to search to find suitable ones and you might need to take a less than perfect one until the right one becomes available. (And they do!)

Renting a boat would be difficult and the time scale for a new boat including lead and build time is going to be more likely a year at least with many builders.

You can find out the kind of thing we do and get an info pack with some good general information from HERE use the contact page to order an info pack if you want one.

Prices of boats and the quality vary a lot from builder to builder but if this is your first dipping of the toe into the water don't be too shocked at the prices! You do get quite a lot of boat for your money and there are plenty of boat builders around to meet your needs and budget.

Hi and welcome to the forum

The boat will not be a problem, boatbuilders will build anything as long as you can afford it.

As Gary says the cost of a widebeam (new) will probably be equal to if not more than a house in that area (have you checked house prices).

Finding a mooring, especially residential, is going to be the hard part.

You will still have all the same bills as if you were living in a house, plus mooring fees and boat licence.

It is not a cheap option.

If after a little more research you still wish to do it, I sincerely wish you good luck.

Any questions, have a search (top right) if you do not find the answer do come back and ask.
