Unusual Insurance Claim!

Just been sent this on the stoppage service:

“Near Chapel Hill, Between Mile Post 37 and 38

Wednesday 12 September 2012 until further notice

There is an underwater obstruction near Chapel Hill on the River Witham (between mile posts 37 and 38) believed to be a car.”

I wouldn’t want to hit this, but what a great BOAT insurance claim it would make!

Not really.

We have a friend who hit a submerged van on the Trent ripping the roof off it and badly damaging their hull. The insurance claim took an age to sort out due to various complications and the repairs were never satisfactory.

It might sound funny until it happens to you

And there was an instance in France last year, where the navigation authority had already been advised of the presence of a sunken car but not marked it, so a claim by a boat which then hit it and suffered damage got very complicated, involving all three parties.

We hit a submerged van on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal last year and decided it was another good reason for owning a steel boat....
