¾ of a mile upstream of Vazons bridge Thursday 5 April 2012

British Waterways have received reports of a vessel sunk in the channel at the above location.

Investigations are taking place and we will issue an update this afternoon. It may not be possible to pass the obstruction, so please slow down, approach with caution and be prepared to stop.

Is it fairly common for racing cars to sink somewhere around the track?

As a regular attendee of motor racing events there are definately a few circuits around that have puddles you could lose a car in! Smaller circuits where the infrastruture is not great and especially ovals can very interesting when it rains.

Yes, I suppose the cars are rather low-slung in profile, so it probably wouldn't take a very deep puddle to swallow one up.

Thursday 5 April 2012 - Thursday 5 April 2012UPDATE (05 April 2012):

BW staff have now visited the site and confirm the following.

A pontoon has sunk in the canal 1.5km upstream of Vazon Swing Bridge. The pontoon is on the north bank and has been marked with marker buoys. Contractors are arranging a recovery operation to take place next week. It is possible to pass the sunk pontoon by keeping to the south side of the channel.

Skippers of vessels are advised to slow down and pass the site with caution.
