iphone app v mini browsers

I've long since used the iphone app to visit the forum. Visited today just using safari and noticed that you get presented with exactly the same interface as the app gives you. Downloaded opera for the iphone and this too seems to detect you are using a mobile and also gives you the same interface.

 

Is there an advantage then in using the app at all as I thinking I may aswell just use one of the browsers if there is not.

 

Any body know??? If there is something I am not aware of I will continue to use the app if not......

Most simple iphone apps of this kind use the iphone's embedded browser to serve pages, i suppose the only advantage is that the page is always behind the home page button (though, of course, you can do this anyway).

I don't bother with the app either..

 

If the app does use the browser, it can't yet take advantage of the faster javascript engine like running directly in Safari would. (I've not tested to see if there's a difference).

Thanks both - iI'll ditch the app too iI think. On speed its very hard to tell but my gut feeling is the browsers are just that little bit faster amd seem less fussy about a marginal signal - no proof on those two points though.

Note: only iOS 4.3 and above have the updated JavaScript engine in Safari that's not yet available to developers.
