12v lighting help needed

Hello,

I've been looking at purchasing new 12v lights for my 45ft narrow boat. I've currently got a couple of halogen strips that are ok but i want to replace the whole system with LEDs.

I was wondering if anybody had any good tips on what types of fittings and where to buy, to get a pretty good general lighting effect?

I've been looking at G4 and MR16 LED replacement bulbs for spots, but i'm concerned lots of these will only give me localised light in certain areas.

Baddie the pirate has a 130mm diameter SMD downlight with 200 lumens for £52, anybody had any experience with this type, or any similar downlights?

If anybody has any info about what they have achieved, websites to look at or photos of examples that would be most excellent.

Thanks for your time anyway.

Try these places.

We use LEDs throughout the boat. All are the warm white variety and we have found them reliable and good to use as main lighting and reading lamps etc. We can have every lamp on ans still use less than 4 amps (not that we do) so the battery isn't drained by lighting use either.

I HAVE FOUND THAT mAPLINS HAVE A VERY GOOD SELECTION OF LAMPS AND ARE ABOUT THE CHEAPEST AS WELL.

Have a look on ebay at "future green lights" shop. I replaced all my G4 halogens with the SMD's in warm white in various styles and shapes. They give a really good light - nice and bright. For me the selling point was the low power consumption which outweighed the initial high cost, but then it is cheaper if you buy in bulk. I bought a couple and decided what i wanted then re-ordered from him. They also run up to 30v and also have some spike protecter if memory serves...anyway he was no problem to deal with and i would recommend.

Have a look at the Ikea Dioder.

I've found them to be the best for brightness and power use.

I used the bar types and theyre such low profile etc. I just installed them along the current lighting so I still have both, nice to have choices :) Although they withstand the alternator voltages fine as far as dont blow or anything, they did lose a fair bit of brightness in the 1st year, I know use a single chip style reg.s on them (less than a £1 at maplins and can run 6 LED bars with ease off 1 chip) 2 years with reg. and no noticable dimming.
