hospital silencer on a barrus

Featured Posts

Help out there I have a Barrus 3cyl engine on my boat fitted with a "normal" silencer. I have seen on ebay a hospital silencer for sale but I have no idea what's involved in fitting one has anyone out there ever fitted one and is this a job that can be done by someone with limited knowledge. Please please sensible answers only I really would like to "quiten down the engine noise

I rang one boatyard who quoted me £500 for soundproofing but I think the main noise is comming from the exhaust.

Thanks

As you can see they are much bigger than a standard silencer so the first thing is will it fit the space you have. If you are limited in your skills I would go to a boatyard to fit it for you, the TW Marine site who I think they all come from should show more info. To fit one there needs to be a suitable attachment point to the hull and you might have to have a bracket made up which should be quite easy to do then you need 2 braided exhaust pipes which are flexible of the appropriate fitting ie male to male male to female etc, one goes from your exhaust flange from the engine to the silencer and another from the silencer to the outside skin of the boat where the existing fitting is in place. Finally all needs wrapping in the heat resistant bandage. Parts alone would be about £100 assuming nothing extra needs doing, plus the bracket, fitting charge and the charge for the silencer

Hope that helps

I fitted ours, quite straightforward really. Silencer at engine end sits on a bracket which stands solidly on the engine bed. The other end (outlet) has a 2" BSP male thread, to this is screwed a 2" BSP 'bodgers' fitting (this has a ball and socket arrangement which allows some angular movement) which in turn is screwed onto a 2" BSP skin fitting. A suitable length of flexible exhaust is screwed into engine and silencer thread as pictured. I used 2" BSP but 1.5" BSP is more commonly used for medium sized engines. Silencer mounted this way is very strong and can safely take the weight of a person. Silencer was made to measure by Servais, much cheaper than buying of the shelf.
