Oxford Waterways

I have just booked 2 boats for 12 people for a stag trip. We will be collecting the boats in Oxford and will have them for 3 nights..

So really i was wondering if anyone has experience of the waterways heading out of central Oxford?

On a stag trip, are you expecting to get out of Oxford then?

:P

Assume you are going from Jericho.

Get a Nicholson canal guide, shows pubs with description.

Suggest first night stop at Thrupp, Jolly Boatman and The Boat. Nice walks around here.Need to paylocal club mooring.

Next "Rock of Gibralter" a few miles up.

Suggest 2nd night at Heyford.

The bit just to the north of Oxford is not that pleasant.

Good luck!

Funny thing, last night I was asked to organise a similar trip fro next year over a long weekend from the College Cruisers base, I was thinking first night in Oxford then mooch along to Windsor for Saturday night and then come back on Sunday. Nice and relaxing, not too many options around Oxford to get to large towns (which is what they want) in a day and a half!

You can get to Windsor in a day from Oxford?!?!?!?! It took me a week to get to Surrey, and an hour to drive back. Although we were slower because of 1. injured crew on day 2, 2. scorching sunshine!

If I was heading north I would go up to Thrupp on day 1 and Enslow to the rock of Gibralter for day 2. Then I would turn around and go home for day 3. It would be tight cruising though.. I think....

oh yes, the moorings at Thrupp are 48hrs outside the jolly boatman (free), and the same further up outside the 'boat inn'. I'm not aware you have to pay unless you stay over the time specified, and they do have wardens on site.

Oxford to Windsor and back in a weekend? Is that possible?! :P

Theoretically yes, if you travel 24 hours a day!

I've just checked over a couple of our old logs, in each case it took about 21 hours of travelling Oxford to Windsor and 23 hours from Windsor to Oxford (spread over several days). But it would take longer at night because you'd have to work the locks yourself (and it takes ever so many turns on those wheels).

Plus of course the hire company would not be overjoyed at one of their boats travelling all night.

So I think that counts as a definite No.

We are going from the college cruisers base, to be honest i dont think traveling huge distances are going to be high on our list.. mainly looking for a good laugh, local pubs and a posh night out clubbing..

Choose this location cause the canal looked quite nice and Oxford has good night life etc. plus charlie at College cruisers was nice and helpful and didnt mind a group of 12 guys.

Manx, are you having their Brasenose boat? If so when? I'd be interested to see what you think of it, I should be on it in next year. Also let me know what clubs you find in Oxford, I've got that bit to sort too!

Hi,

No we were going to have that one but we have 13 possibly 14 going so we have gone for two smaller boats instead a 8 berth and a 6 berth.. least we can play pirates etc with two boats! :P

We are not going until the end of July, which may be too late for you? I to have to organise the clubs and bar trips etc but one of the guys is from that area so he has some good ideas for me.. can pass them on if u like?

This is the second stag trip ive organised and if the first one is anything to go by you will not need much in the way of organised events, a couple of set things is ok, but its great fun being able to go with the flow for at least a day..

We're going a lot earlier than that, the wedding is in May! If we find anything good I'll let you know, meanwhile if you do find out about good clubs etc please do pass them on. We too will be having 2 boats, the big 'un (which I'll steer) and a smaller one for the rest. I'm looking forward to it, my mate has already started calling me Admiral! I've got some ideas for t shirts that I'm going to get printed up, should be fun!!

:P last stag trip we did we have t shirts with "A Pint of Guiness Please" on the front and our names on the back.. worked well when we were unable to speak all we had to do was point at our fronts and a pint of the black stuff would arrive.

we were thinking of having a pirate theme, everyone must wear an eye patch or other item of pirate clothing at all times as well as speaking like a pirate of course.. but we are not 100% yet. I can see the groom walking the plank or being set adrift in a open boat ( £10 inflatable dingy) for mutany.

Ill ask my friend about the clubs etc for you.
