Need help picking dog's name for new boaters

'Lockie' is fine up to a point. That point is halfway up or down a flight and having to shout "Oi Lockie, stop sniffing that mans butt!"

I'd suggest something like Hoover.

BTW, is the licence cheaper for B&W?

Ideally, for training the dog and getting him to respond to his name, it should be of one syllable and have a hard consonant sound at the start and end. that is why working sheepdogs mostly have names such as Bob or Meg. it is easier for the dog to recognise.

I find that it is useful to be able to recall a dog with both a name and a (human) whistle. In noisy places such as around busy locks or over the sound of the engine, a whistle carries much futher and above other noises.

I'd go for "Slow Down". Then when you let it loose on the towpath you can call it/him/her back in harmony with all the other moored up boaters.
