Lister sr3

If you can, get the SR fixed. Causes of smokey exhaust can be varied but sometimes it can be a clogged injector nozzle.

The governor linkage is fixed to your fuel pump that's inside the crank case basically. The injector is fixed to the fuel pump and this is timed by shims to regulate injection and so on. So, it's not quite like a regular fuel injection pump seen on modern diesels.

I'm no expert but I think you need to check there is oil circulating around the crankase and no specific leak. Check for any oil leakage around the engine bilge. The manual gives the following information about black, smokey exhaust (if yours is indeed black smoke):

(1)Overload

(2) Poor atomisation due to choked injector nozzle.

(3) Unsuitable fuel

I'm not sure where you can get hold of a good Lister mechanic as even at the boatyard where I moor the SR isn't typical of the engines they service. The fear is some mechanics may claim servicing an SR is the same as any diesel but in reality I think the SR has certain special requirements, especially due to the fact shims are used for timing and all the injection process takes place within the crankcase.

Sometimes Lister engineers are listed in boat magazines but make sure it's not the Lister Petter range.

Tony Brooks has the manual on his website and every owner of a Lister needs to have this handbook and, if possible, to read it thoroughly in order to know how to do oil changes, filter changes, bleeding air and general maintenance.

Personally I'm a huge fan of Lister SRs, have my own engine on my boat and hope to find a scrap one at some point and learn how to strip them down myself. I do think they can be quite complex but they're a fanatasic example of British engineering in former years.

Help needed I have a poorly sr very smokey and burning oil and the exhaust value keeps sticking thinking of getting a static engine and fitting to boat .but dont know how to change governor to make this viable.
