Instrument Panel Mounting Box

On NB Maggie we have a fairly standard rectangular VDO intrument panel currently mounted outside in a wooden box with wooden lid, which is going to need replacing soon. Anyone know of a good source of a plastic box complete with a lid preferably clear ?

 

I know quite a few boats just have the outside of the instrument panel exposed to the elements - any views ?

The cabinets or enclosures used by electricians sound ideal for this sort of thing. They are available in plastic or steel in many sizes. The steel ones are usually powder coated and lockable. They are also available with clear plastic fronts. Have a look here it may give you an idea what I mean.

A lot of panels are waterproof anyway but its always good to lock them away from random button pushers!

There is a massive selection available, I would go for a GRP type, fully gasketed IP55 or IP56. Totally corrosion free and easy to cut holes and drill, choice of lock mechanisms. You will find every electrical wholesaler has a different range of products.
