Permissible fridge gases seem to change repeatedly. I've just installed a small air-con unit in my hovel and it uses the latest (or so I thought) "R32" refrigerant but the commissioning engineer said R32 is soon to be obsolete. Different refrigerants need different designs of compressor, evaporator etc to work properly. One cannot take a new fridge and fit a 12v compressor from an older fridge unless both use the exact same refrigerant which given the pace of change, is unlikely. The gas for my I3 is a fortune! The aircon cools the battery as well so always runs, the Interior is another circuit

When swapping a fridge compressor the system needs evacuating and the refrigerant captured, not just cut the pipes and let it escape to atmosphere. And yes the firm that commissioned my air con were very concerned to calculate how many grammes of R32 they would be putting into my new system and to bill me correctly for it, even though R32 is mostly propane, apparently. Or so I think I read somewhere. Could be wrong on that!

If you do, you'll realise Shoreline must be making a wafer-thin profit when they sell a cheapo fridge fitted with one. I recently investigated converting 240Vac fridges to 12V as a business venture, and couldn't work out how Shoreline can possibly wring a profit out of doing it at their prices. I'm gonna leave them to it! LEC about 25 years ago made and marketed to the public a 12/24 volt fridge. I intended to buy one but waited until the boat was finished by which time they had stopped selling to the public but only to selected retail outlets and now they were only available at a somewhat inflated price
