He'd either walk (on sticks) to the lock or unload his disabled buggy (him, not the buggy), he would open the gates and using bow and stern thrusters drive the boat into the lock using a remote control (similar to what hoist operators use - a big 'phone' on a string around his neck), close the gates, empty / fill the lock, open the gates and remotely drive it out, close the gates load up his buggy and away he'd go. A very independent gentlemen - no longer on the cut and his garage was up for sale a few years ago, did not sell and is now a 'derelict' hunk of metal.
