Hi all i have a 1993 3cylinder Mitsubishi thornycroft engine on a 45ft narrowboat. The boat was a hire boat on the mon and brec for about 10 years and then a private boat. We have had her for 10 years and are putting in around 200 hours a year but now we are out continuous for summers this will be much higher. god knows how many HP she puts out now but she is quite gutless and slow (not a particular problem except on rivers) so my question is do you think it’s worth a rebuild and if so to what extent (full out and rebuild or just top end) or am I just being paranoid and it will go forever even through abused? Ps due to things breaking most of the ancillary bits have been replaced: gearbox, exhaust, alternator, drive shaft, stern gland etc etc

Hi all, Disclaimer! mechanical noob, so apologies in advance for my missed terminology/diagnoses! I have noticed a small leak from my throttle on my Thornycroft BMC 1.8. I had the RCR out yesterday, the chap mentioned a seal would need to be replaced as this has degraded, hence the leak. As the engine is still nicely purring I was hoping to get to the marina I am on route to, to resolve the issue there. At present the leak is a drip every 10 seconds roughly. I have put a container underneath it, which is collecting the diesel. I have included a couple photos below. 1) I imagine I can buy a replacement seal from BMC and hopefully repair this myself? Is this advisable? is there any risk I can do further damage? I haven't even started to look into how I do this, but just wanted to know if it would be worth me researching the method or not. 2) The diesel has been dripping onto my rubber engine mounts Anything I can do to try and preserve the rubber, other than isolating the drip and keeping diesel away from the mounts? Hi, I have a 1993 narrow boat powered by a Thorneycroft 27HP, have recently been losing power/dropping out of drive and there is a significant and increasing delay when pushing the throttle forward/back before the drive kicks in (with an audible and felt thump!). Can anyone suggest things I can do before I ask for professional advice on this? (Its already cost me a fortune!!). Any thoughts gratefully received, including expected life of engine/clutch/gearbox and likely/best replacement and cost. Thanks - have had a fantastic summer boating by the way (Boat is a home fit out 1993 V hulled 44ft/6'10" on the mon and brec canal and I purchased this year and have had everything on survey completed (hull/electrics/new exhaust/engine bay clean and serviced engine). There is no rev counter so cant say exactly, however a low tickover in forward drive achieves about 1 mph and middle power about 2/3 mph - haven't gone faster than that as the canal is very shallow.)

Hi All, I am planning to service the above engine on our NB this weekend. I used to service my car years back, but I am pretty much a novice and haven't worked on diesel engines before. I am pretty practical, so I should be ok and don;t want to pay 120 - 150 for the (dis)pleasure of someone doing it for me. I gather I need to replace fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and of course oil. Anyone out there got anything to add to that list? The engine runs well actually, but recently it takes a while to start (maybe 30 - 40 seconds before it finally fires) and is much smokier than it used to be when we first bought the boat in the summer. I'm guessing it needs a service anyway. Looking through the stuff that the previous owner left, I have two new fuel filters (a Crossland C1191PL and a Coopers/Fiaam FT4788/AZF015 - can I use either??) and what looks like a fan belt (Gates 6375MC 11.9 x 1010). Should I change the latter as there is a new one?? This sounds like it might be beyond my skills. Does anyone have part numbers for the oil and air filters to save me climbing down into the engine compartment and trying to look for them on the old ones?? Any advice would be very much appreciated!!!! Cheers!!! Mike
