Having just acquired a nice old (maybe 19th century) walnut on oak marble topped wash stand, I am wondering what are the most important dos and don’ts are when it comes to returning it to its former beauty. It’s the blemishes on the doors I’m really concerned about.

Hi all, my 60A alternator has given up and I need a replacement/ repair job done. I've tried to take the alternator to car parts dealers recently, but no luck. The serial number on the unit has worn away, but the engine is a Beta four-cylinder keel cooled diesel engine. Any ideas of where to go to get a replacement, or if it can be assessed for repair?

We bought a Norman Cruiser and have found that someone along the line has done repairs on the back corners and now the (bodged) repairs have fallen to bits and we have been left with 2 cracks that go way under the waterline and at the bottom the cracks are actually holes !!! The wood reinforcement is now rotten right across the Transom and needs to be renewed. The boat yard that has lifted the cruiser out of the water, said that the wood needs to be removed via the tiny space under the floor. This is so tiny, how do you work in there with angle grinders etc. ??? I suggested removing the rear section of floor panel to make it easier to access but they said I cannot do that as it will effect the rigidity of the boat. Is this correct ?? Has anyone ever done this type of repair ?? Would be grateful for any input from anyone with any ideas. Many thanks.

Hi all. Today I have taken my narrowboat out for the first time in a year. I'm currently moored on the canal and am stranded. Today when on the water there was some loud clunks when shifting into gear. The boat then stuck in gear and I ended up crashing into a lock. Traumatic experience... I have just discovered I have no oil in the PRM 120D2 gearbox. Can anyone advise my next step to fixing this issue please? Is it as simple as adding more oil? Many thanks, Jason

Hi, Anyone with experience of working with boat engines please can we have some advice?! Have just bought a narrowboat and trying to work out if we need to replace the engine or if its repairable- I've attached a photo below of the problem- it has a hole in the crank casing. If it needs replacing does anyone know where we can source a suitable engine for a 57' on a tight budget. Seen calcutt prices and theyre way out of our league. Thanks for your help, Imogen and Staszek

Hello! One if the flexible plastic windows in my canopy has come adrift and whilst i have toyed with the idea of a flash new shiny replacement, the rest of it aint in bad shape, and i more to the point, i cant afford to! so... Is there a professional PVC glue i can use to try and repair this? It was glued previously, not stitched, so not so much of a bodge.. Cheers!

Hi, I bought a collingwood sailaway in February and have been cruising in it every two weeks since then. I discovered yesterday that the dripless shaft seal is leaking. It isnt just dripping but a significant trickle of water is coming in. I though the jubilee clips might need tightening so I tried this but it made it worse. Has anyone replaced one of these before? And if so can it be done in the water, I have seen videos where people in yachts do it in teh water with the aid of a greased rag. I was thinking of a greased rag around the outside and then another on the inside as I swap teh seals over? I'm after some guidance please, I really dont want to take the boat out of the water if i can help it and ideally would do the work myself. Also, any brands of shaft seal that you would recommend, ideally someone I can have a chat with on the phone about the installation! Any help would be appreciated, I realise that Collingwood should probably correct this but I havent the time nor inclination to chase them about it I just want it fixed! I have attached a picture of the leaking seal. Many thanks, Will

Good morning all, I'm a longtime reader of the forums but this is my first post! I've just completed the purchase of a 57 foot trad stern narrowboat, I am over the moon as I have wanted one since the age of 18, that was a fair amount of time ago! To cut a long story short, I completed the survey, which was undertaken by a guy named Will Flannery, whom I cannot recommend enough! He found that there were some minor pits which would need addressing, I contacted the boat yards welder who advised puddle welding should do the trick. There are a fair few around the water line, but they aren't deep enough to cause an issue... yet. The boat has recently been blacked so this will require dressing it back to expose the pits so they can be filled in. My question is, is it okay to locally re-black the immediate area around the welding? Or is it more advisable to remove the coating and redo it once welding work has been completed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Doug

Hi I know nothing about engines, engineering, gearboxes and the like. My sincere apologies. I have a narrowboat with, I'm told, a Lister LH150 Hydraulic Reverse gearbox. Having made it through the Standedge Tunnel, it started to cut out when I put it into reverse. Initially it would restart and move into reverse okay, but it became progressively worse on the downhill stretch to Huddersfield, and since getting to Mirfield I was unable to get it into Reverse at all, it's permanently stuck in forward gear. I've got it down to a wharf in Wakefield and they've checked it over, but it's nothing particularly obvious (adjustment etc) so I need advice from an expert - is it fixable? Am I looking at getting it taken off and sent away somewhere? New gearbox time? Help! Thanks Rob
