  1. Hello My husband and I are looking to live on a narrowboat full time with our dog. We have quite a list of requirements and I have planned the "Perfect" boat layout....the main problem is, that it doesn't exist in the real world The perfect layout is: Trad stern to galley, through to salon with wood-burner, door to walk-through bathroom, door to study area with large wardrobe for dressing area, through to bedroom with cupboards and cross bed looking out to the bow. I am thinking no longer than 58ft. I wanted to find out (from those with experience) how tricky / expensive it is to change the layout of a boat...or if it would be better to buy a sail away and start from scratch..? Thank you
  2. I am refitting our boat and we have a new plastic watertank. we are planning on getting it spray foam insulated when we have our boat insulated. we are planning on removing a section of the subfloor and having the watertank sit on the ballasts/ girders there will be about 3 inch gap between the hull and watertank. Is there a danger or condensation trapped in this gap, should i insulate under aswell?
  3. Hi guys, I have recently required a 70ft lovely that could do with a bit of TLC. I'm looking to renovate just one room to begin with. The bedroom. It's entirely separate from the rest of the boat so shouldn't take so long. Whilst I'm quite handy with this kind of stuff, I just wanted to get some feedback from others who have done this as to what problems could arise. It isn't insulated very well - in fact, I can see the filling hanging out the bottom now - it looks like old mucky wool. So, I would look to install some Kingspan panels and board over that. i also wanted to know what wood people use to finish - I appreciate a lot of this is down to personal preference, but again, another's experience is always worth hearing. Thanks in advance. Michael.
  4. Hiya, We are about to attempt a bathroom refit on our narrowboat. We are stripping old the old (very) compact bath and possibly replacing with a compact corner bath to save a bit of space. The plan is to go from a bathroom off a corridor, to one the whole width of the boat but with a entry/exit door in each side (if you know what I mean). We're pretty new to narrowboats, but we plan to do it ourselves - it doesn't look that hard!! (we'll see). Main problem: since we have had the boat, sometimes in the morning, or if we haven't been onboard for a day or so (we are in the process of moving from our house onto the boat) there is a small amount of often smelly water accumulated in the bottom of the bath. I don't really see how we could be taking in water through the outlet. Sometimes the pump takes a while to get the water out. Is anyone familiar with this problem? Is it an issue with the plumbing, or with the pump, or what?? Second problem: this is more ignorance. But as the water in the boat is not under pressure (unless the pump is on), then can I take the pipes off the bath/sink taps without water flowing out of the them? If so, then I guess I need to seal them off at the ends before I use the water pump in any other area of the boat? That's probably a ridiculous question, but whether it is or not, I would appreciate some advice! Thanks in advance!!!
  5. Hi. We are carrying out a partial refit of our narrowboat. At present the shell is lined with varnished and veneered 3-ply and we intend to paint the interior an off-white so that it doesn't feel like the 1970's. We're pretty new to this, although not stupid! So far we have sanded and then wood-fillered any holes and rough parts, and then re-sanded. Any areas that are a little worse for wear around windows we have sanded a bit more aggressively, covered with a wood-rot treatment, wood fillered if necessary, and then finally roughened up a bit with sandpaper so that the undercoat/primer can take hold. We have used a damp proof white emulsion undercoat (Wickes own brand), and then plan to cover that with a silk or matte finish top coat. Does this sound like a decent course of action? I'm presuming the top coat should not be water-based? Can anyone suggest a good paint type to choose from that's available in somewhere like Wickes or B&Q? We have only completed one room so far, and then it occurred to me that maybe we could have gone with a one-coat (combined primer & topcoat) wood paint, thus saving time, and possibly money. The boat (65ft 1998 narrowboat) is not damp, but a damp-proof undercoat/primer seemed like a good idea to us at the time. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!!
  6. Well, I have made a good start on the refurbishment. Having stripped out the old floor, kitchen etc, I found two pin hole leaks in the hull under the water line which is why the hull had always got two inches of water in! Holes sealed and the hull cleaned - amazed that a previous owner had simply put attic flooring panels on top of a wet, rotten floor. The original flooring that rotted and was then covered Next, strip out the kitchen "units" and the seating together with the associated platform. The same with the odd little shelf in the bows. So far I have managed to take seven full loads of rotten timber to the tip - my car is a mark 1 Honda CRV and has a lot of space in the back. After a break of a few months due to an extended period in Egypt back to the boat for a ten day period. Thanks to my daughter and her family for putting up with me for that long! Starting in the bow, I have panelled in the wasted space Then I panelled the area under the side pockets and have given it all a first coat of undercoat Moving towards the stern, I have built in new kitchen units (yet to be finished), opposite them I put in a raised platform with two seats (cupboards under), new 12mm water resistant ply flooring on 2" square struts and a full height wardrobe (originally it was a narrow half height with a tiny shelf on top). Flooring going in with the seating platform. Wardrobe to the right, toilet room to the left The kitchen with sink, oven, rings and grill and fridge in place but not connected. At this point I came to the end of my 10 day jaunt. With an impending house move in the next month, it looks like everything goes on hold once again until the end of June at the earliest. In the meantime I have had the engine serviced (last time was in 2013) replaced the "morse" control unit as there was no key for the old one (since discovered that replacement keys are readily available (doh!)) When I do come back I need to completely re-wire the boat, it had an interesting mix of bell wire, speaker wire and mains wire, none of which was routed through the fuse panel, I need to add a second battery together with the charging system. I still have to try and figure out some way of getting a shower on board - that will need a shower tray with associated pump etc at a level enabling us to stand upright, as well as with some method of heating water. There was originally a gas water heater in the kitchen and the roof vent is still in place. Anyone have a water heater in reasonable nick going cheap? I have the roof lining (vinyl) ready to be attached in an effort to reduce condensation and carpeting needs to be sourced. New cushions and covers are a necessity. I have managed to seal most of the window leaks, with the exception of the front hatch which has a very annoying drip. I will have to make a cover for the hatch which seems a common idea, in the meantime a bucket helps! In the process I have met (and contacted) some lovely people, not least Wayne and his lovely long suffering wife. The other moorers on the Marina have all been fascinated by my progress (or lack thereof) and have offered help, advice and all manner of items from electrical connectors to their pram hood that they're replacing next year. I must admit I'm looking forward to my next visit, as, with a working engine, I can actually take the boat out on the canal. If anyone is thinking of refurbishing an older boat my advice would be GO FOR IT! It's fun (sometimes frustrating) and rewarding as you can see the improvement happening. There's a sense of pride knowing I've made it happen and at the end of the day the boat should be worth more than I originally paid for it. I will update as more things happen.
  7. Hello everyone, I just bought a narrow boat from the 80s, moored next to little Venice and I would like to completely redesign it which imply: -move the bathroom and completely change it -move the kitchen as well and add appliances -new floor -new bed I am not going to do the work myself completely, because I am new to boating, and I really need someone to coordinate the whole renovation in order to do a nice job. Can you recommend anyone that has done a complete refit of a narrow boat and could help me? thanks for your help
  8. Hello all! This is my first post - I imagine it may become the first of many! I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of having refits done at Springfield Marina in London (on the Lee river)? I'm getting my bathroom redone, and have been quoted at £312 per day (this is for two people to work on the refit). This seems pretty expensive but am struggling to get other quotes who fit in with my availability. Does anyone have any experience of having a refit done with Springfield? They aren't coming up smelling of roses with the current research I'm doing, but I remain hopeful! Many thanks in advance! Sophie
  9. I've seen this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60ft-HISTORIC-1909-BANTOCK-CONVERSION-Narrowboat-Project-/131755956273?hash=item1ead445831:g:6TsAAOSwHgVW7ELiand wondered where you would consider starting with something like this? I'm not NB owner or prospective purchaser (OH is over 6ft and keen to stay landlocked, for now...) but I am a history buff and work in a museum so appreciate the need to protect our heritage. However, this is just a puzzle to me. It's had all of its guts ripped out and as a bare shell is it as historically important as it would've been left intact? I don't know, I'm just pondering. I think this was briefly mentioned in the Historic boats for sale thread but at over 3000 posts it's a struggle to find anything. If you were rich/mad enough where would you start? Stephanie
