Hi all, I hope posting this is allowed! Myself and a few others are working on a short (5 minute) documentary film about the canals in and around Manchester for a university project. We’re posting here in search of potential participants. We’re looking for individuals who are currently moored in Manchester (so Castlefield, Ancoats, ect.) and would like to share their stories of living on canal boats, life on the waterways, why they decided to move onto a canal boat etc. We’d also be interested in individuals who run businesses from their boats. We’re also looking for a historian who is familiar with the Manchester canal area. If you’re interested, or know anyone who’s interested, please reply to this thread Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm looking at visiting Manchester as a continuous cruiser and I wondered where are good places to moor up. Am I correct in thinking that it's for 7 days at a time? I'm coming from the Peak Forest canal, I've heard I might need a new license for the central Manchester waterways? Thanks in advance!

In February 2016 I need to take a 57 foot shared boat over the Rochdale to Sowerby Bridge which will be our new base. I am thinking about the Manchester to Rochdale Summit section and where we might safely moor overnight on this stretch. At present my idea is to start early from Castlefields and go to Thomas Telford Basin (a tiny detour up the Ashton but recommended as a safe mooring). Additional crew join us at TT Basin. The nest day we make for The Rose of Lancaster PH. After that I am not sure. Is there anywhere in Littleborough? Any advice would be very welcome.

We are on the Weaver at the moment and planning to do the rest of the Ship Canal next weekend. Whether we go Marsh Lock to Manchester, or up the Bridgewater then Salford back down to Marsh Lock, our timings mean we will end up in Manchester on a weekend night. I've moored in Castlefields before, so would like to do summat different and stay in Salford overnight if possible. This thread http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=54830 shows one mooring spot which is helpful - anyone know what Salford Quay is like on a Saturday night? Eastham control mentioned having to stay on the boat as no secure moorings, but that doesn't tally with other info. All advice gratefully received! I also understand you can explore up some of the river Irwell, but can't seem to find much more info. To help with timings, how much time to I need to allow for a good explore? Can I come up from Marsh Lock on the Weaver, have time for a good rummage around interesting new bits of urban water, and then overnight in Salford or even then go up Pomona Lock same day? Is the Weaver-Manchester bit tide dependent for shipping, or is that only downstream? Finally, as we haven't got VHF, anyone local who does have a licence and a portable set who wants a jolly on the Ship Canal next weekend (day yet to be decided), feel free to PM me. Those stationary ships we saw en route from Ellesmere Port were HUGE - and it would be nice to be able to communicate with any that are moving near us...

Hey, I've been looking into living on a narrowboat for around a year now after it being a life long dream! I am currently in the process of trying to secure a mooring spot in Manchester. I am struggling to find any websites or direct contacts too the marinas etc based in Manchester, in order to pop my name down on the waiting list or whatnot. Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the process of getting hold of a mooring spot in Manchester?! Any advice would be amazing Thanks Chloé

Hi everyone, I have enjoyed reading through posts here in the past, but this is my first ever post! Can anyone suggest some residential moorings in the Greater Manchester region? My wife and I are relocating from Canada to Manchester next Spring, and having previously lived on the Norfolk Broads, we'd love a similar lifestyle in Manchester. It is a little difficult planning things on the other side of the world, but we are coming over at the end of the month and we would like to visit some moorings. Any help/thoughts would be much appreciated! Ben

Hello, Totally new to boating and looking for a permanent (non residential) mooring on the Bridgewater Canal (preferably close to Manchester) but can't find any information. Have been unable to get a response from bridgewatercanal@peel.co.uk and wondered what everyone else's experience was? Is it usual to have trouble gaining info about this sort of thing? Have seen mwebb@peel.co.uk suggested many times, but he has now retired. Finding it very frustrating. Thanks in advance for any help or advice, it would be very gratefully received! Amelia
