The BCNS virtual tour of the canals in the centre of Birmingham has been extended: Now the stretch of the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal, from Aston Junction to Salford Junction, is included, with more views of Salford Junction: j.mp/birmingham-canals It is planned to add historic information, and especially old photos. "Old" means just "different from what it looks now", not decades old. If you can help with photos, please let me know! If they are paper prints, slides, or negatives, they will be professionally scanned, and you'll get them back, of course! This virtual tour will be extended from Salford Junction up the GUC "Birmingham & Warwick Juction Canal" and the Digbeth Branch to Aston Junction again. You may have noticed a virtual tour of the planned new route of the Lapal Canal, created for the Lapal Canal Trust: j.mp/lapal-pano

Many of you will have been following Mattys epic voyage across the BCN and the huge amount of challenges he faced en route. As the absentee owner of BALDOCK I can only applaud his tenacity and perseverance at overcoming the huge number of engineering challenges and the colossal amount of rubbish he stripped off the blade. I would also thank the support from various members of this forum in keeping Matty going and in particular Rob for turning up in person and adding not only an extra pair of hands but valuable personal contact. Boat delivery is a tough and lonely job at the best of times but when things start going wrong it gets an awful lot tougher. Well done everyone .... this is what CWDF does best of all

Its not every day someone throws up something entirely new about the BCN. Brownhills Bob is a prolific local historian / commentator and he has today posted an item about what appears to be a temporary dam which would have existed about the time the Chasewater Reservoir failed. It looks to have lasted for just a couple of years and contained about 350 lock fulls of water for the Ogley Flight. http://brownhillsbob.com/2014/11/30/when-the-dam-burst-2/ Have a look at the attached link and see if you can add anything to his report. Heartland - have you come across this before? Andy

Today CanalScape-BCN did a volunteer job taking Canal & River Trust's principal work planner for England & Wales Jonothan Pritchett out to see if a deep drafted boat could still access "Blue Button" tip on the Bradley arm where debris from the embankment collapse nearby could be tipped. Our next job was then to go and look at the actual collapse in Coseley Tunnel cutting. Our first surprise was after going down the Bradley arm astern we were able to get right in to the side at the old tip meaning there was a good 3ft of water available for loaded hoppers or joey boats. The tip hasn't been used since the late 1980's. We then proceeded to Coseley tunnel to see the collapse, frankly speaking it doesn't look healthy and if the canal was a railway or road it would probably been closed months ago. For those interested in Geology its worth a look. After getting fish & chips from the Black Country Museum and winding we passed it again and I must say its not a spot I would like to linger in, the rocks are very loose! I've decided we want a copy of the BCN blue book to grace our new bookshelves and entertain us on next year's BCN Challenge. I hear they come up occasionally on Amazon/Ebay. However, if anyone has a copy (or a copy of a copy) they want to part with, please do let me know. Forum seemed a sensible place to start shopping!
