  1. Can only assume it's a small sump and didn't have the 7.5 lts in at the start. As I said on my original post, the oil level was spot on, and I,m still waiting for Beta's response, but it's only been a week since I asked them!!!!
  2. Haven't had a reply yet but will let you know when I do.
  3. Thanks Bullfrog. I think the water tank being empty didnt help things. Will probably leave it for the minute and remember for the next time.
  4. Yes, the oil is dark when it,s dipped but will leave it for the minute, might wait and see what Beta say. Thanks for the info. Paul.
  5. Yes, ran it for about 10 mins then let it settle and checked. It was as high as the gap between min and max. Thanks for that, I,ve sent an e-mail to Beta and will be interested to hear what they say.
  6. No, I cant, sorry. Just pumped it into a washing up bowl and assumed it was all out.
  7. I thought that but it seems a lot to be left behind.
  8. I have a Beta 38 and changed the oil last weekend. The oil was at the correct level when I started. After draining off the oil until nothing else would pump out, and replacing the filter, I poured in the 7.5 litres as stated in the manual but after checking later found that the oil was way above the max mark. I had to drain off 2.5 litres to get it down to the max. Could the reason have been that the water tank was empty and the boat was leaning down to the stern and the oil was away from the pump?. I am concerned because I pumped out Halfords 15/40 and put in Morris 10/40 and now there is a roughly 60/40 split. Should I be concerned about this and fill the water tank and try again? I look forward to your advice. Regards, Paul
  9. Speaking about this to the lads on the building site today. When I was a kid living in Durham in the 60,s, in the winter my normal attire was a grey duffle coat that was on tick fron Kilburn,s of Horden, A blue balaclava and a camphor bag round my neck which was a little cloth bag about 2 ins square made from a bit of scrap curtain, and a camphor tablet bought from the chemist inserted inside. Many a winter's morning I could be seen galloping to school with the duffle coat just fastened on the toggle at the neck, coat billowing behind, balaclava pulled up from the neck so just the eyes could be seen, and the unmistakeable smell of Vic trailing 200yds behind. Never had a girlfriend. Don,t know why.
  10. Thanks for those numbers. Just the job. Paul
  11. Hi. I am going to change the oil on my Beta 38 and was given a part number for a crossland filter that might be compatible as it fitted a Beta 43 but getting in touch with Beta, this isn't the case. I don,t want to send away to Beta for a filter costing £9 and £3.95 p and p when the is a car parts firm just down the road. So any compatable makes and part numbers would be greatly appreciated. Cheer's Paul
  12. Hi everyone, Our names are Paul and Kath and we have been reading this forum for a few weeks now so we thought we would make ourselves known. We bought our narrowboat Celestine at the end of September from Mercia Marina and because we both live in Cornwall we thought Foxhanger's at Devizes would be as short a drive as we could get. Still 3 hour's though. So I set off single handed from Mercia and headed for Oxford where Kath and our ageing but young at heart Springer Spaniel called Daniel would meet me to do the last leg to Devize's. I would like to thank Rod and especially Doug from Mercia for the simple advice to not rush things and enjoy the journey. Wise man!!! The help I received when boater's found I was single handed was gratefully appreciated and I had an absolute ball all the way. I especially liked the challenge of planning the trip to end the evening near a pub. But being a Geordie builder this was second nature.! After picking Kath and Dan up at Oxford we had a leisurely trip down the Thame's then on to the K and A. Now, after single locks, those on the K and A were real eye-opener's. I could here Doug in my ear; " Just take your time, Paul". Anyway, to cut a very long story short. Thanks to everyone. Even BW who back dated our licence a couple of weeks so we could set off earlier and miss any stoppages. A 2 and a half week trip in all. I'd better sign off now. I don't even know if I'm clever enough to post this. If it doesn't get to you, please let me know. PS. I know some will be thinking; I'll give them a year. Some will be saying; go for it. All I can say is you only come this way once and if you don't try, you don,t know, and as soon as I can get my 20 year old twins to leave home the sooner we can get the For Sale sign up.
