Hello, I bought a well used Maculloch chainsaw years ago for £40 as I was only going to use it every few months or so. It's done ok, but now it starts after a while but cuts out after a few log cuts. I don't want to spend a fortune servicing it, as I'm thinking of getting a new Stihl if this one has had it. So, I've put a new plug in, new correct ratio fuel, and I'm just about to buy a new coil and fuel filter for it. So I want to know, when I replace the coil, do I push the magnets tight against the drum or do I leave a very slight gap? I think when I removed the old coil, it was tight against the drum but I'm not sure. I did think of taking the carb off and checking the membrane but I'm a bit fingers and thumbs so thought better of it.

Evening, it's a few years since I've posted on here, and I've sold my boat now but always browse and this problem rings a bell with me. About 2012 I was, I think on the Wenford Arm crawling towards the end, when my engine sounded like I'd cruised over a Tesco trolley. An awful grinding metallic noise so I shut the engine off and checked the prop. Nothing. Came on Canalworld for advice. Told to check around the Skeg. Nothing. I informed everyone that I couldn't even turn the prop shaft in neutral with a pair of stilsons. Told that the gearbox was then the likely cause. So after a while I started pumping more and more grease into the stern gland and gradually, using the stilsons, it freed itself. I was told by another boater, who had a similar problem that he had a lot of grit between his prop and stern tube. Worth a go I suppose before the gearbox gets dismantled.

The cars not bad Sam. 150,000 miles. Mot due September. It's a handy car for my building tools, springer spaniel, and stuff like that. Just had a alternator priced at £150 inc vat but going to get my sons mate to plug his gizmo in to see if there is damage to the electronics. If it's bad news, I'll be looking for second hand A4.

Hi, just been out to check and my battery showed 11.9v before starting. After starting with no load it's showing 11.4v. Belt seems fine. I hope it's just a case of a new alternator. You're right Sam, I may have to scrap it which is easy, it's finding a few grand for a half decent replacement which is the hard bit.

Thanks for the replies. The car is a 2005 Passat estate. A mate of my sons is a mechanic and has one of those iPad things that plugs into the car and has offered to pop up next week if I need him. I'll try the various suggestions though and I may learn something. Thanks again.

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. For the last couple of weeks my headlights have been pulsing slightly, about 2 pulses a second. I'm assuming it's the alternator. Coming back from my special lady friends house about 2 hours ago I was accelerating up a hill when I heard a bleap and all my headlights went off. I pulled to the side of the road and found out that my sidelights and tail lights were still working so tried to limp the six miles home through the Cornish countryside. After a mile or so I tried the high beam and it worked so I travelled back through the lanes so as not to blind anyone. After a few minutes various warning lights came on the dashboard but those and other dashboard lights were getting dimmer. So I'm asking is it just a case of putting a multimeter on the battery tomorrow when the engines running and see if it's showing about 14.4. And any idea why it looks like both dipped beams have blown when the high beams are ok? Again apologises if this is in the wrong place.

I bought a trail camera a couple of years ago. It's a Bushnell HD. It's used regularly on wildlife programmes as it has a quick shutter speed and a long battery life. The first one I bought, from the USA, developed a fault on the sensor but Bushnell in the Uk said send it back to their headquarters in Surrey and they would replace it. They did with a top of the range model that has black led,s that don't spook wildlife. I'm always worried in case someone finds it but I live in a quiet area in Cornwall. Be careful where you set it up because if a branch or plant waves about in the wind in front of the camera you will have a couple of hundred shots of nothing. They are exciting though. I had a video last year of a pair of ears poking above some ferns behind my back fence. For a split second, I thought it was a kangaroo until a deer popped its head up.

I've been reading your posts Sade and for a minute I thought you were the woman who has just bought my boat Celestine, but you aren't. I am travelling up from Cornwall tomorrow to hand over the keys and show her round the boat. She will have a mooring on Caen Hill and has just sold up and downsizing onto my boat. She is as excited as you are. I had my boat 3 years and in 2011 had a cruise up from the Kennet and Avon to York and the Ripon canal to meet my nephew who was on leave from Afghanistan. I took it steady and got to Ripon in 8 weeks then over the Leeds and Liverpool< back down the Trent and Mersey, Oxford, Thames, and back to Devizes. You will meet some fantastic people. And some bloody idiots mind. But on the whole, you will love it. Believe it or not, I'm getting quite emotional writing this. It looks like I'm going to miss the boat more than I thought I would. God knows what I'll be like tomorrow when I say goodbye to friends.

Thanks for all the replies. I will do all that is recommended. I'll be back on the boat later in the week and take some photos and email them to my sons to put on the Duck because I'm not quite up to that level yet. I've had an enquiry this morning from someone I met at Fradley a couple of years ago. I'll see how that pans out. Thanks again. The truth hurts a bit but not as much as not selling my boat.

HI, I have had my boat for sale on Apollo Duck for a week now but I am a bit confused. My advert says I have had over 2000 views. Surely that must be the Duck website in general? I cant believe my advert would have that many views and not one serious enquiry. I don't think the boat is too overpriced to put people off that much. That panel that cashflow mentioned looks fine for me. If I buy a controller that doesn't give a digital readout, will my victron battery monitor tell me how much is going into the batteries?

A couple of weeks ago I charged my 4x 110,s up to float with my gennie and charger. I don't do this as often as I should. Lets say every time I get the hoover out. About once a month!! Anyway, after leaving them for about an hour, I tested them with the hydrometer and every cell was showing roughly 1.22. On my hydrometer scale it is just into the fair category. My questions are this. Can you tell by the hydrometer readings how far the capacity has diminished? And if so, where does the cut off point come where it isn't cost effective to keep charging sulphated batteries? They are 2 year old liveaboards, by the way. Ta.

Hi, I,ve just got back to the boat after a week away and looking at the victron bmv 600 battery monitor, it is showing nothing. No power getting to it, by the look of it. I charged the batteries to float before I went away and removed the electric master switch. Getting back to the boat this afternoon I put the switch back in and everything works but the monitor which was fine before I went away. I pulled the grey cable out of the back of the monitor, gave it a blow, and reconnected. Nothing. I followed the grey cable through to the engine bay where it is connected to a brass block with 2 brass bolts which all the negatives are connected to. Please excuse my ignorance but electrics aren't my forte' The grey cable looks like it is connected to the brass block between the 2 bolts and it looks fine aswell. It looks like it is fitted to a little multi plug. A couple of mill to the right of this small multi plug, there is a red cable that may or may not be related to the grey victron cable. The red cable has an inline fuse which is fine and then runs off to a battery positive. I,ve looked at the little booklet that came with the victron but no trouble shooting guide. Its been fine for at least 3 years and I like it. Any ideas, in laymans terms please. I do have a multimeter that I can play about with. Thanks, Paul.

I,ve looked in the search facility and I,m still none the wiser. What I think I,m looking for is a 150 watt panel and a controller that shows whats going in; not a traffic light thing. I only have a 12v telly and a led light on at night and the odd pump going off now and again, so I don't use a lot. Don't use the laptop during the day and only charge when the engines running. The idea I get is I should get one for about a £1 a watt but I cant find one. I should have said the tv uses about 1.8amps and the led light about 0.1 of an amp. The batteries are 2 year old liveaboard and are in average condition. I,m just looking for something to keep the batteries topped up rather than power any equipment.
