  1. If the bow isn't 2 foot up the bank, you're not trying.

  3. Yes, but who wants to cruise a boat that looks as if it was taken through a very low bridge at high speed! Quick, where's my bucket of smiling smileys...
  4. Why do they do two windows?
  5. I would not travel in high winds if: I had a long way to go or I knew there was a risk of grounding in that particular part of the canal or people were fishing! Dealing with the wind by itself is ok but the combination with shallow sides would put me off. Otherwise I would do it. If you were cruising in an area where stopping was not recommended then you would press on and this is no different. Don't try to cruise slowly in the wind, just go for it. Only slow down if you reach a point where you are going to hit something that you ought not. Taking off may be difficult as you have indicated. It may be necessary to walk the boat past neighbours to start. Bizz, can you devise some sort of strap on keel for us?
  6. Is it practical to visit the Trolleybuses at Sandtoft from a narrowboat? Where is the nearest mooring point?

  8. I'm impressed. A good piece of work. I like the idea that each visitor moorings are best aimed at one category of boater to avoid over-demand. For example, near shops etc OR near good public transport but not both. And I like armco even if it isn't armco!

  14. I threw away my first computer. It was a Kim 1 and it had 1K of memory. Programming was solely by keypad in machine code.
  15. And a Durban myth if made in South Africa...
  16. Good one.
  17. Not me. I wrote a dump interceptor / reformatter & register save area trace, saved loads of effort.
  18. But CICS Macro Level / Assembler was much more fun...

  20. I enjoyed my stressful office job tremendously but had to retire early as the brain cells wore out. I fiddled around for a bit until I discovered fitting out a narrowboat was allowed and I have enjoyed doing that tremendously. If I could live on it I would do so instantly but I have to wait for my other half to kick the bucket. Why would I go liveaboard? Because I could fiddle with the boat for 14+ hours a day. I have woken up at 04:00 and started work on one occasion (no neighbours). I like to make the need to pick up materials a pretext for going on cruises, even when they could be delivered more easily. Fitting out a yacht or boat other than a narrowboat would not interest me one bit.
