On this day in 2009. Henhurst Lock, Wigan, L&L BW had adopted a customer service standard of having a lock ladder on each side of wide locks: it's clearly safer that way. To implement the policy across all the single-ladder locks in the Wigan region, management proposed a rolling programme of lock closures starting in the middle of September, rather than alongside works in the the winter works programme. This was not met with any enthusiasm by local navigators, and this sign on the lock nearest the Wigan office was intended to satisfy all parties until the work was fitted-in with other maintenance activities.

On this day in 2018 Buckby Locks GUSouth Sadly, it's all too easy to slip into the canal, and even on a warm day (having avoided all the potential disasters of rotating propellors, drowning, sharp underwater debris, crushing by moving boats, caught by rushing water, ...), it can still be difficult to get out again. Fulbourne has space for equipment-storage and this was the first time this ladder had been called on to help someone out of the canal, and on this occasion it was easily long enough for the job. Both boats carried on in our opposite directions with no permanent discomfort afaik.
