  2. "A message from our chair". What an articulate piece of furniture he is. Could you explain your "fired the gun" statement? That would suggest some sort of aggression or antagonism, which I didn't notice.
  3. I'm still surprised to see £interesting" and "gin" in the same sentence - though I get the impression that it's had a bit of a revival in recent years, just as cider did before that. What will be next, sherry?
  4. This reminds me of the days when I worked as a buffet car steward on the Festiniog Railway. In those days that part of Wales was "dry" on a Sunday, but you could buy alcohol on anything that was moving. So all the local topers had season tickets on the railway, and the 11 a.m. departure from Portmadoc was the "beer train". As luck would have it, the train reached the intermediate station of Penrhyndeudraeth just as the chapel near the station was turning out after morning service, and of course the inhabitants of our buffet car raised their pint glasses and smiled cheerily at the congregation as we passed. I suppose that the local pubs are open on a Sunday nowadays, which must rather spoil the fun.
  5. W hen I was at university in Brum, a pub boat appeared on the canal which ran along one side of the campus. I went there on a couple evenings. I can't remember if it was a narrowboat or a wider beam craft. After a few weeks it went away, perhap because somebody told it to.
  6. Do you know what, I haven't seen any either.
  7. How can you tell? I for one have found it highly atmospheric and was looking forward to the rest of your log.
  8. Hmmm...file under typical Eurofodder - lively enough, but with no chance of winning )though, based on my pervious form as mentioned earlier, it probably will win now that I've said that). At least ahe keeps her performance fairly low-key and doesn't cavort around wearing 5,000 sequins or come onstage riding on a puma. It is after all supposed to be a SONG contest and not a PERFORMANCE contest.
  9. I have a few Eurovision winners in my record collection. My favourites are probably 'Tom Pillibi' by Jacqueline Boyer and 'Waterloo 'by Abba. Nothing too recent, though.
  10. According to the internet, yes, and the building is Grade 2 listed. The landlord and landlady who have run it for 33 years have just retired and sold it, according to the local paper.
  11. An eye-witness account of commercial carrying on the Exeter Canal is of great interest and is probably unique. Please do carry on I can't see how your account could offend anybody, especially as you have "bleeped" any obscenities.
  12. Mrs. Athy and I will probably watch it on telly as usual. In years gone by we used to award each song marks out of ten, but our choices were always so hopelessly at variance with those of the official juries that we gave up doing so.
  13. I see that Katrina is American; is she appearing at the Crick show as part of a U.K. tour, or is this information not correct?
  14. You're probably right. But then, how many people buy a National Lottery ticket each week? Even I bought one once. I'm not sure why, but it puts me in mind of that offer of free airline tickets to New York. Did anybody ever get one?
  15. There's a rumour that you have a few spare ones; perhaps you could help?
  16. Of course not. If one is given all the facts, one no longer needs to speculate.
  17. Nevertheless, I'm sure they will both fit in well.
  18. Yes, there's a topic about it, called I think 'Vinyl Records - are they waterproof?'.
  19. Yes, though "roped in" is perhaps unkind. I know you're a [lain bloont Northerner, but even so...
  20. I certainly wouldn't say that it has a variable diameter, no. I'm away from my S.O.D. at the moment, and on-line definitions are inconclusive: they tend to state that diameter is USUALLY used with regard to a circle. Yes, I knew that...although one source did mention trees, which tend to be roundish but not strictly circular. Jury still out.
  21. I'm sure that people will go the whole nine yards to get accustomed to it.
  22. Lucky i wasn't being totally serious then. I wasn't sure about the diameter bit, but I was sure that if I wrote it here and it was wrong, someone would quickly tell me. It's most often used in relation to circles, but surely not exclusively? Probably "Oh sh**!" which, while understood throughout most of the land, is not helpful in pinpointing location.
  23. Sho' nuff. I'd rather the squares were three yards or ten feet in diameter, too. In my limited exposure to the Which Three Words system, it appears that the choice of words is entirely random. So I could be sitting here at Boing Jelly Iron or Pudding Chair Sometime. Is there any logic in the choice of each name? Also, let's say I phone for a take-away delivery or an ambulance and tell them I'm at Breeze Molar sausage. How do they find that location?
  24. I would guess that Jo is referring to battery hens.
