  1. Indeed, and while trying to separate the 2 halves I got covered in that evil black slimy stuff, maybe i'll turn into an Orc.. Casp'
  2. It's just the back half that's removed, so the remainder should be fairly balanced, it will get fixed onto a big pulley, which will keep it in line. Not sure how critical keeping it balanced is on a slow revving engine, the pulley that came with the engine has a big bolt sticking out of one side, which is as original, so I guess Ruston's didn't worry too much about it. Casp'
  3. It's going onto my Ruston & Hornsby as a way of making it electric start, don't expect it'll matter if it's dual mass or not. Casp'
  4. The shaft on my new engine is a bit shorter than on the old, so to save space I decided to split the dual mass Volvo flywheel, which is enough to allow it to fit neatly. Although people moan about dual mass flywheels breaking apart in cars, it was really really hard to separate, involving a rather big grinder.. It's full of some odd stuff, like very thick (solid) grease, with steel rings stuck into it. I got in a right mess as the grease-like stuff got everywhere.. Casp'
  5. I'm afraid courtesy on the canals is not what it used to be. Boats have ever more powerful engines and they want to get as far as possible. I think it's been the private boats that have been worst so far this year. Casp'
  6. There's a Ruston 2VSH attached to a welder genny on ebay. Says it's all working as it should and has a starting price of £300.. Casp'
  7. It's home and some work has started, stripping all the stuff off that I won't need. It means I can sell the substantial trolley, the radiator and bracket, the fuel tank and original fuel filter, and the water pipes. I may end up getting back nearly what it cost me.. It looks smaller now.. Casp'
  8. Correct.. The only place they can do any good is right at the back, where there are more nobel metals to act, like stainless and bronze. Casp'
  9. Ended up getting a 1VSH. This should sound nice in the boat, but won't be particularly speedy.. Needs tarting up first, and the seller said the tappets needed altering, not that I could hear anything. I'll have to clean the sump out as this is where Rustons suffer, I'd also like to put a removable hatch in the sump oil strainer as you have to drop the sump to clean under it, which is not possible when it's in the boat. No oil filters were fitted to these engines.. Casp'
  10. Anodes on the sides are a complete waste of time. Anodes only work over a very short area so you'd need them all over the place. Don't waste your tine and money. Casp' problem with recessed boxes is that the anode only protects the box, it won't work on the actual side of the boat.
  11. Thank you. They seem to sound better when they're given some stick. My boat has an 18x19 prop for the Ruston, but that was limited to only 1000 rpm, so I expect it would shift with an HA2. Casp'
  12. Neither of the videos seem to want to play on my pc.. Casp'
  13. I've looked on youtube but I can't find a single video of a narrowboat with an HA2, there must be loads on there.. I want to show my daughter it so she can hear the engine. Her engine snobbery is worse than mine and she wants to stick with a single cylinder.. On a different note, is the HA2 the same size as the HR2, I could do with knowing the dimensions to see if an HA2 will fit into my tiny engine room, my brother has an HR2 so I can measure that.. Casp'
  14. Have you seen the size of my engine room... Casp'
  15. I need to buy it with someone else and then chop it in half.. Casp'
  16. I always think HA's have a much nicer exhaust sound, HR's tend to sound a bit busy. Casp'
  17. I didn't mean to put HR2, it's an HA2 i'm toying with. An HR would be a bit powerful for my little boat.. Casp'
  18. That will be good, I'd always assumed they were in London.. I can manage a trip to Brum. Casp'
  19. Did you ever find out where they are? I'm toying with changing plan and getting an HR2.. Casp'
  20. Just enquired about a 1vsh for sale, seller says it has had new liner, rings and had the injector and pump serviced. I asked him what the crank looked like when he removed the piston, and he said it wasn't perfect.... My engine strip down started like that.. Though it is cheap, so can't decide if it's worth looking at and removing piston to see for myself, though of course i'd have to buy it to do that.. Casp'
  21. Yeah, I contacted that chap to see what VTH parts he had, so that's probably why he's listed it. It doesn't help too much as even a new crank would need grinding to suit the bearings. You can't get the main bearings the right size. The Ruston is sitting in bits, until I decide what to do, If I were to manage to find another VTH then i'd obviously want to keep a lot of the parts, if I end up with a different engine then I'll probably end up selling the parts to fund it. Casp'
  22. It's just a stationary engine, so no gearbox and only hand start. From the pictures i'd say it at least needs recommissioning, looks to have been stood for some time. Can't interest you in a 2DSM instead.. Casp'
  23. £1500.. I don't really want to end up with another engine in need of work. Casp'
  24. I received photos of this 2VSH today. It's not quite how I imagined it... The owner says it was fully rebuilt and the company that did it fitted a plate onto the engine to specify what they had done, all good, until you see the date; 1979.... The engine is covered in cob webs and has surface rust all over it. No idea how hard to worked between it's rebuild and now, so I won't be driving to London to look at that.. Casp'
