  1. I simply drop a pin to each location I stay at overnight and tag it with "boat was here" with the date on Google Maps which gives it a unique looking "pin" (blue) on the map. Out of curiosity, how does your app improve upon this flow that I have for myself?
  2. I love the ease of the toilet on my boat (before she sank, lol). I do my business and pull a lever and away it goes into the tank. Simple. Finding a pump out is never too hard, merely an occasional inconvenience every now and again. It's the cost that's the most annoying, having to pay 15-20 quid every 6-7 weeks. The idea of traipsing a plastic thing around full of my waste does not appeal and I've been in some of those Elsan stations and some of them are truly squalid. I don't like cleaning at the best of times so having to pop on the marigolds to rinse a cassette does not appeal.
  3. Yeah from being made redundant, having to leave the country where the job was, returning to the UK, deteriorating mental health and then this sinking seems to conspire against me. I wish I had a bit more resilience right now.
  4. Thanks! It’s a BMC 1.5 so hope it isn’t too difficult to sort out.
  5. As soon as I noticed the exhaust outlet and water interacting, I cut the engine off immediately. I just created a go fund me that I sent to my Quaker friends https://gofund.me/ac7cd40c Thanks!! Have done this morning yep. Thank you. That’s promising. Unfortunately no, no union. I’ve taken refuge at my parents. I mostly need help because once it’s out the water I don’t know how much I’ll need to make things right again, if that is possible.
  6. Hi all, Yesterday my boat sunk on the River Trent. Water came in through the weed hatch and unfortunately I was unable to save it from going under water. As a result all my belongings are underwater and potentially ruined. The boat was my home and I loved it. I am disabled and receive benefits so you can imagine how hard this is for me since I had to use redundancy money to secure the boat. My question is does anybody know of any charities who can help people like me in my situation? I managed to get off with my dogs and the clothes on my back but everything else-laptop, iPad, mementos, heirlooms, bed, food and furniture is underwater. Thankfully my insurance will help get the boat to land but the contents, electrics and even engine are unknowns until that happens. I appreciate any help or advice from you lot. Thanks.
  7. Thankfully, the poppers are only attached on one layer so that should be easy. It’s the zip that’s threaded through several.
  8. Hmm, I am happy to give it another go. I need a stronger needle and thread. I have to pierce through 5 layers and pushing my needle through even one by one is a pain. I end up just bending nails or suffer with sore fingers, even with a thumbnail. Thanks for those poppers. Didn’t realise how cheap they were.
  9. Oops. That is long beyond repair. Silly autocorrect. Ta My pal said two of her needles broke using her machine ! Thanks pal
  10. Anyone have any recs for cratch cover repair on the GU? I have ripped the zip from the fabric on both sides and lost one popper button on the other side. I managed to hand sew one side mostly but can’t be bothered with that agin as it was painful and time consuming. Would prefer to have someone with an industrial sewing machine. Thanks. Currently at Beeston and working my way London bound.
  11. How long do I hold the heater plugs before starting? Not sure I understand the question. Is that turning the ignition key half way before to full ignition? Once I turn the key, the engine will start after about 5 seconds. After 5 seconds or so it’s a rush of sound, black smoke followed swiftly by a larger cloud of white smoke then I slowly and smoothly take my hand of the key. It does clear and then sort of comes back for a bit then clear almost as if by random.
  12. Yeah, when with others we go quite slow up and down the locks, today I was alone and the rush of water coming out the locks was immense. Quite enjoyed the thrill. Yes lockie confirmed today that the controls in their little huts are much more forgiving and let you go a bit wild with them versus public controls.
  13. No I don’t run the engine in idle but I do go quite slowly. Although, the past week I have been cruising daily. Those videos were on the River Trent. They were refurbished 7 months ago.
  14. Hi there, I have a BMC 1.5. Upon start, there is normally a cloud of white smoke which I’ve come to learn is quite normal. Sometimes however the engine exhaust will smoke but I am unable to ascertain why this might be. I took two videos. One just at the beginning of my journey so about 20 minutes in and another video about an hour and 15 minutes later. I didn’t change my speed and the conditions were the same throughout but the difference in smoke is confusing me. Maybe this is normal and I am overthinking it? Any clues here. Sometimes the smoke appears white as it leaves the exhaust but slightly blue as it goes about the air. Other times, it isn’t even there. smoke: no smoke:
  15. Good to know for next time! 👍🏻
  16. It was manned. I went up. I was advised that it’s now too late to get further to Newark as the lockie was off. Cromwell was fine, he knew of my arrival from Torksey.
  17. No, i called nobody, I forewent the charts and decided to just barge my way through because of the entitled person I am! Of course, I phoned…
  18. My speedometer said 4/5 miles per hour. Arrived at Cromwell after 4 hours and 45 minutes so couldn’t continue to Newark as lockie had clocked off. Took 3 hours to get there so quite the difference. Don’t believe I was going that slow but I was against the water and I was navigating into the wind.
  19. Yes, not the end of the world really lol. Poor man, quite a shame they can’t make the posts paid and permanent somehow.
  20. That's what I did. The advice was "I've heard of this before, best to just wait for someone to turn up". Problem solved. Lockie did turn up by 11.30 and let me through in the end. A bit annoyed as I had planned to set off first thing in the morning and I didn't make it to Newark. Canal time strikes again.
  21. you mean you haven't heard of the red scribble monster that lurks in the wharf's waters? good luck!
  22. I suppose I’ll just wait until someone decides to volunteer then…
  23. I swear I saw this boat at Market Harborough Union Wharf! Look behind us in this photo… TAKEN IN DEC 2022. It was on the leisure moorings at the time.
  24. I’ve been calling phone numbers for the tidal locks to no avail despite the website requesting 48 hours’ notice. At Torksey, no one has been here this morning or yesterday when I called. I’ve been told to just “ wait around”. Can you man the Torksey lock on your own or must I rely on a volunteer being here to let me through? If so, what a rubbish system. I have places to be and this delay is quite annoying.
  25. That’s right! Thank you both.
