  1. Crikey, and still this thread rolls on but all in all quite interesting and answered all I wanted to know so thanks folks! Malc
  2. How would I have that if I lived on a cruising boat and why should anyone insist on that re CC?
  3. Well, like a few others I'll be buying mine with money left in my father's will, thought about naming it in some way after him, he had no interest in boating and was frightened of water although his surname was SHIPP so that gives a whole heap of possibilities!
  4. Not if it meant driving back over the area already covered that could take several days, if I nip off on holiday elsewhere I'd like to come back and just continue the journey where I left off.
  5. Its being sold on behalf of someone else, I'm not dealing with either of those chaps, tis a lady.
  6. Already been onboard it and tried bargaining but they not shifting, of course it might be different in 4 weeks time when I actually have the funds in the bank!
  7. I may have asked that question but I didn't say I wanted to or had any intention of doing it. I'm new to boating and want to learn stuff. I'm planning to go exploring for a year and live onboard but after that I'll probably get a mooring or if its not for me then I'll sell up having had my adventure. I was concerned that 'should I desire' to bugger off on holiday somewhere else during that year for longer than 14 days I'd get into trouble and didn't know whether having a mooring somewhere would give me different rights to moor up on the towpath, I wasn't saying it should or it shouldn't, just asking if it would. Hope I cleared that up, now can someone please sell me their Aqualine Canterbury for under £100k please. What on earth is a galvanic isolator?
  8. Where did I say I wanted to stay anywhere longer than 14 days? Opened a right hornets nest here didn't I? I'll see if I can think of another innocent question that causes the same amount of fun! Cheers Malc
  9. Depends how many bridge hops you are from my previous mooring
  10. I have no clue where those places are but I'm guessing there are lots of bridge hoppers around there and so folk are beginning to assume that's what I plan to be, fair enough! I'll be somewhere between Bristol, Reading and Oxford generally!
  11. No no please don't let anything ignite, it was just a query and nothing more, I'm planning to go on a continuous cruise and well within the BW requirements but wondered what would happen if I wanted to shoot off on holiday (from my cruising holiday) for more than 2 weeks, but I'm sure I'll have a list of friends that will be glad of a free boating holiday! Cheers Malc
  12. Thanks, that answered all I wanted to know so it doesn't have to go on forever, was just curious to know if the rules were the same or whether having a mooring somewhere entitled you to something more than a CCer. Cheers Malc
  13. Hi All Done lots of research on this forum and its been useful but I don't seem to get on so well with the search option. Anyhow, I was wondering, if you did have a mooring somewhere but went for a big continuous cruise and barely clapped eyes on it, are the rules the same for you as they would be a CCer with no mooring (ie: still only get 14 days on the towpath) and is there any stipulation that your boat has to be at its mooring for a set period or set amount of time? Cheers Malc
  14. Got it working now, I hadn't properly worked out what to do and was using Google Chrome which didn't help! Cheers Malc

  18. Thanks folks, will take on board what you say about the surveys although whatever I buy will either be brand new or very close to it as I'm not one for tinkering around with old engines and pumps so I'm banking on the hope that a new motor will give me less headaches and if it does go wrong then it'll get sorted on the warranty. I'm well aware too about the raised eyebrows of continuous cruising and have looked into the possibility of a mooring but decided there is no point, if I want to look at the same view for weeks on end then for me there is no advantage of living on a boat. No plans either to just bridge hop in West Wiltshire backwards and forwards although I do see plenty that appear to do just that and get away with it for now. Knowing my own likes and dislikes I cannot see me getting bored of CC but if I do I'll either flog the boat or get a mooring, no harm done. Cheers Malc
  19. Hi All Just sold the house and should just about be able to buy a decent boat to live on and have a small flat/house to rent out and keep a bit of investment into brick and mortar. I'm totally new to boating but planning to live aboard straight away, got a completely open mind and if after 12 months I'm not getting on with it then I'll just sell on and go back to dry land but I have a feeling I'll love the adventure and soon get used to the minor inconveniences. I'll be constantly cruising well within the new guidelines, my work is spasmodic and takes me in a few directions so it really doesn't matter if I'm in Bristol or Newbury and some of my work is done at home anyhow, I'm sure parking is a pain in the arse when cruising so I'll keep a little scooter on board with me. I'll be kicking off from Bristol hopefully end of March or early April. Hope to see some of you along the way! So, first question, I've seen a few boats that fit the bill but all in Reading and Henley, wondering how many hours it will take roughly to get from there to west Wilts. Secondly I'd like to be south of Oxford on the Thames during July so how many hours from Reading to Oxford? Am sure there must be websites with this info on but Google seems to bring up a lot of junk to wade through. And lastly (for now), when you buy a boat 2nd hand does the BW licence normally transfer over with just a change of details or is it a stop & start affair, amazingly a BW phone operative was unable to answer this and pointed me to their website! Thanks very much in advance! Malc
  20. I've seen this happen and it drives me insane too, the problem is that if it is a few teenagers you just have no idea what they might be carrying and nobody wants to end up in hospital or dead due to a McBox, nor do you want a key down the side of your boat or a petrol bomb lobbed at it. Camera is a great tool and most of us carry one these days in the shape of a phone. But, aiming a camera is a bit obvious so here's a tip. If you are with your partner or whoever, just get them to pose for the shot and then zoom the camera straight over their shoulder to the evidence. Works a treat! Oh and if you want to see how litter destroys the environment and beauty of canals, hills, beaches and just about anywhere, go visit India!!

    NEC SHOW

As a newbie that is considering liveaboard later this year or early next I was keen just to look at the internals of a narrowboat up close. I looked beyond the layouts and right into the nitty gritty of the quality and fittings in them. Well, for Amber boats, if that was their show boats then I dread to think what their non show boats are like, appauling tacky fittings and doors that don't line up, that would irritate the hell outa me. Sea Otter fared slightly better I thought but I definitely saved the best to last with the inspection of the Aqualine boats, these were absolutely a million miles apart in terms of quality. A classic case of 'You get what you pay for', my mind is made up of the exact boat I shall be plonking on the K&A in the hopefully not too distant future!
  22. Just out of interest I wondered if any of you folk have experimented with HDR Photography. A simple search for Canal and HDR in Flickr brings up these Stunning pics You can even do this with non SLR cameras, I've done a few with my tiny Sony compact, obviously its much easier to produce with a decent SLR. You need software which is now built into some photo editing programmes or the most popular is Photomatix Cheers Malc
  23. Hi All I'm just at the contemplating stage of buying a boat later on this year in the Bath to Bradford area hence why I've joined the forum. Anyhow, just thought I'd point out that I nearly abandoned trying to get in this forum due to a load of broken links on one of the site pages. If you go to the About Us page from the home page, none of those links at the top work, they all head you towards an index page that (technically should revert back to the home page) doesn't work. Surprised it hasn't been pointed out as this would undoubtedly lose members like it nearly did me. I can help fix it if needed. Cheers Malc
